[BTS] Nobles' Club 203: Mehmed II of the Ottomans

Thanks for playing with us! Do share your game. :)

Here is my save up to turn 78. Playing noble, normal speed, no huts, no events. Would appreciate any feedback on my play.

Spoiler :

  • Settled capital in place.
  • mining -> bronze working because I would need to chop a lot in this city
  • Partially built warrior until size 2, then switched to worker. Is this OK or just better to build worker immediately?
  • City 2 (Erdine) because of gold and corn. I also wanted to block off De Gaulle because I met him first.
  • City 3 (Ankara) because of rivers, pig, and Charlemage for trade routes.
  • City 4 I'm debating between the marked locations in southwest vs southeast. Southwest appears to have more strategic advantage because it blocks 2 civs from expanding into my territory. Also the Korean doesn't expand too fast in my limited experience so there should not be much border tension.
  • Besides settling 4th city, I'm unsure where to take the game from here. I'm considering swordsmen rush on Charlemagne but it is expensive and it will still take me time to build an army.
  • Pretty lost on what tech to research next. Thinking about tech trading the religion civics and research Monarchy for the military happiness. Other option I'm considering is currency because all the gold!

@zeebo1 I see that noone have replied. :)
Posting a few screenshot is often more helpful for feedback than just posting the save, at least to get some discussion started.
Just press "print screen" when in the game, and a screenshot file will appear in "C:\Users\zeebo1\Documents\My Games\beyond the sword\ScreenShots"

Regarding your questions:

Spoiler :

Partially building warrior is absolutely a good idea as you can get to a position where you can build the worker with exp-bonus at pop2 which you can't really get at pop1.
If the warrior is close to completion though, it can be better to postpone the worker for a turn, just to get the warrior out. The work he does scouting/fogbusting or possibly workerstealing during the time it takes to build the worker is well worth getting your worker out a turn later.

Swordman rush isn't something I have any experience with, but it sounds risky to pull of a stunt like that against a protective AI when you have more readily available targets. :)
You can get some happines from the ottoman aqueduct, which is on the way to construction. This is the path I choose on this map.
Get to catapults and smash someone. And go through math since there was an insane amount of forests, which can be chopped easily since we are exp and can afford alot of workers.
I realized later that this was quite the overkill, as one could get very far with just horsearchers, because...
Spoiler :
It seems Degualle is lacking metal, and when there are no spears horsearchers do miracles.

The pressence of gold shouldn't do anythign to affect your desicion to go for currency, what is your reasoning here?

For fun giving this a whirl on immortal.

Spoiler Up to 325ad :

Out of the blocks went for BW and headed towards HBR. Settled in place.

Grabbed Horse/gold/marble/ wheat site near Koreans and made them my first target. He had no metal and I left him with 1 city.

Given huge commerce resources on map I went for HRE next. He had just hooked up iron and I took the city with it on same turn. Left him with a gem city.

Next target was the French. Only had chariots and archers. I had catapults and HA. Albeit I mostly used HA as quicker.

During this I declared on Koreans to wipe out their 2 cities. He now had horse and metal. Now wiped out.

1 HRE city left who Koreams had bribed into war with me.

Built Mid, Hanging Garden and MM wonder. Had to wait for French city for stone. 19 cities 325ad.Just started a golden age for rep and CS civic. May need to build a fleet to speed up my next war. I suspect I want to get fued to start capping Ai here. Still 8 Ai left. Soon to be 7 in 5-6 turns.

Played on to 1150ad.

Spoiler Thoughts. :

Probably should of aimed to control 2 of the continents fully to reach domination level. Not sure if this would of worked.
3 AI dead. 3 AI as vassals. 5 to deal with.

Mix of cuirs and Jan/trebs. Gradually switching to fully cuirs.

Sal has 14 cities and I have no open borders. I have a bride to his continent so maybe astronomy is not needed. Think the Ai here should be quite easy to finish off. Egyptians lack metal.

Overall since last save attacked Toku with pults and phants mainly using galleys to cross the coast. Then gradually attacked other AI. Been pretty much at war most of the game.

I think on Deity Sal could of been a pain. Reality is on immortal if you quickly go to war you have so many cities it's just a case of when you wipe them out. Dutch here only has 4 cities. Greeks and Ragnar similar amount. Suprised Sal has no vassal.

Game has not crashed once. 16gb of ram on Civ 4 works well.

All done 1260ad.

Spoiler All done :

End of day I didn't need to touch Sal's continent. Probably could of capped him if I wanted to in 10 turns. Overall went for land. Had to liberate 2 Hetty cities to get the land. So 3 Ai destroyed. 4 Ai vassal and 4 that didn't matter.

Guess it would of been a bigger challenge on Deity. Early warfare always make Civ 4 life easier..

So, I was going through my screenshots and realized I have played this game. I only have this 1812AD Conquest Victory screenshot.

Spoiler 1812AD :

I am mentioning it now because I see Lain has gotten 1814AD Domination. It is funny how 2 different games converged to basically the same date.

Lain went with Cannons and stuff into first war, while I went with Fighters and Carriers plus Cavalry, followed by Tanks and Bombers. My opponents had Railroads and his were still on roads. I guess that is making wars so much easier, even if you do not really have the tech edge as I actually had, at least with military tech, for some small timeframe. Moral of the story: attack as soon as you can. I used to be aggressive as well but lost confidence during my hiatus. Lain did really great job (actually, much better job, if we were completely fair), considering he is actually CASTING and playing. But still, two different approaches, almost the same date. Map destiny. :D
