Nobles' Club 271: Peter of Russia

Nice one @keaaa !

Spoiler :

Monarchy before BW seems very unusual, but in this perticular situation it might be good actually. Dire happines situation and multiple wine-tiles around.

And...40 second before the (first?) subscribe button shows on screen :shake:. Normally that's the point where I tell Youtube to disavow all knowledge of the channel, but I'll keep watching just to see the map being played :).

Player during last weekend, but never got the time to summarise

Spoiler T226 :

I went for Great library -> .. -> Music -> .. -> Nationalism -> lib -> Military tradition

Finished GL and bulbed philosophy+ researched Bureaucracy before starting first GA. Used GA for civic change and managed to get 1 GM and 1 GS during the time. Also got a 5(6?) more GS during the game, bulbing Education++.

Had a comfortable tech lead when closing in on lib.

I have never been close to this early lib also including nationalism, so happy with that. Started building HA for upgrading to cuirassier, and had a GM ready for extra money. Pascal was kind enough to also provide quite a lot of gold for trading + begging. Also got Taj Mahal for second GA during this time.

That said, the land was quite hard to get any production out of, with little food for whip+ not that great natural production. So it did take some time before I managed to conquer Egypt.

I saved gold during the war - getting some good trade towards teching rifles. After finishing rifles and upgrading to cossacks I went for the big group (with the help of second GM). Pascal had Elephants and pikes for deff, making the first part of war really easy. The cossacks did really shine against Suleimans knights and cuirassier, but just by the size of Ottomans, it did take some time to kill him off. Claiming a victory in 1580AD. This could have been optimised quite a lot, but I find the micro management during the late game, when victory is obvious to be quite boring.

Have really learned a lot during the last games, with how to manage great persons++ other details. Like this game I had an issue with getting too many GS, as I had both GL and National Epic in the same city. Would have preferred a couple of more GM for money or something else for one more GA.

Started Immortal (added barbs tech as described).

Decided to go Bronze Working first and build 2 Workers.

Spoiler First 30T :

Exploration opened NW + N + NE part of the coast. While I saw second pig on T5 I committed research to BW. On T13 by wounded Explorer died on NE, succeeding to contact Gandhi.

On T14 hill Pigs was mined but Started to work on Wine to finish BW in 2T so 1st Worker will be busy chopping.

T15 gave contact with Suleiman.

T16 gave BW, declined revolt, it delays 2nd Worker by 1T. 1st Worker started chopping. Working mined Pigs again.

After WB research path Agriculture => Wheel => Pottery. I need to my many early Workers busy with cottages.

T17 gave contact with Ramses.

Chopping & mined Pigs gave me 2nd Worker on T19. Overflow goes into Settler.

T20 both Workers goes to forest simultaneously. Agriculture requires 5T, Settler with 2chops will be ready in 6T. Having another city early looks promising (fog busting with city instead of by Warrior xD).

T25 gave me Agri.

T26 gave me Settler. 2 chops stacked into another Worker next turn.

T27 gave me 3rd Worker, 2 Workers were building farm on Corn, 3rd entered forest for chopping.

T28 gave me second city 4N2W with only one shared tile but city has access to 2 flood plains for grows + free trade route across the river! Another tempting destination was 2nd BE Pig but AH in 7T away and no +2G trade... Worker started to build farm here... Whale was revealed in the 3nd city ring, not a big deal ))

T30 gave me first Warrior )) Started farming Wine because there is difficulties with research rate...

Spoiler T43 Got Wheel & Pottery, ready to revolt into Slavery :

T35 gave me Wheel. 3 Workers were almost idle so I'll start connecting resources and planning
upcoming city network. Pottery is 8T away.

T43 gave me Pottery, now Workers have something to do.

Going to revolt into Slavery to finish 3rd Settler. I'll settle it South to calim lend towards AIs.

I want AH next to find out Horses.

The question for experts. I play Imm a bit and feel pretty safe avoiding Warriors early on (up to T50). According to table https://civilization.fandom.com/wiki/Difficulty_level_(Civ4) barbs should start appearing on T15 and start settlement 25T later.

When do you have to start fog busting on Deity?

@gavenkoa maybe the pigs spot is better than corn, former has river and :commerce: is the problem. Blocking land isn't necessary, you have plenty of nice land.
Going to revolt into Slavery to finish 3rd Settler.
You mean revolt to slavery to 1-pop whip the capital? I don't think that's a good idea. Just work the wine for extra :commerce:, 3rd city is not that urgent and I don't think you do anything with slavery right now. I think I'd just grow to max to work cottages, slow build settlers and try to get monarchy asap.

When do you have to start fog busting on Deity?
Barbs enter somewhere around T38 I think. Initial unit does most of the fog busting and at least you can control the direction barbs enter from.

Yes. Pigs are next city spot.

and try to get monarchy asap
That is not obvious to me.

I explain. I saw Gems on south. I'm not sure if I will be able to capture them. They allows 6 => 3 whips in all cities. And Dye is waiting for Calendar:

Spoiler Gems location :
NC273-T43-gems.jpg

The problem they are far from the capital and my exploration stopped early so I don't know if AI is nearby to claim it first or if there are other problems with the spot.

Probably Deity player won't consider that idea... Because Wine is already in the city radius... And Gems requires Iron Working to get rid of Jungle...

I am sure only about Writing, and also want AH for 2 Pigs (and to find Horses location); the following research path is in the fog... I consider exploration & low :commerce: are my current issues and some exploration might clear research goals.

I've never done HA rush & Marble is awaiting for failgold. Oracle is also a possibility. I'll try to progress a bit and them read spoilers from the beginning.

Spoiler T63: AH + Writing :

I decided to get +20% discount to Writing from AH. Unfortunately I had 3 cities and upkeep 8C so research struggled... And 3-4C unit upkeep (4th Settler and because of low Pop after whip).

I'm not sure that AH => Writing was correct. My cities regrew on Barracks. Instead they could put H into Libraries...

Barbs started to annoy but I had already had Horses )) In that way AH first repays ))

Now city borders are the problem.

There is no forest to help with Obelisk or Library. I think pop border via Libraries with 4->2 whip and skip Obelisks.
