Nobles' Club CLVIII: Hammurabi of Babylon

@dalamb.Nice 1902 space victory. From the tech screen looks like none of the AI even had rocketry.Sounds like going Fusion 1st worked out better,Im going to try that next NC game, and if the map lets me,try for a real early space ship.

Upon recommendation by elitetroops I'm having a go at this map. 775BC so far. On Immortal NH/NE.
Spoiler :
Settled on the obvious spot: the plains wine for an extra hammer and commerce.

Found out it's a semi-isolation map fairly soon, so was unsure what to do, but after a bit hither and tither I decided to HA rush Roosevelt, particularly because he built Stonehenge for me, and free border pops is always nice. Took the first city in 1000BC with 4 HAs, and in 775BC the bloke is dead. Put a turn or two into Alphabet, thinking about getting some techs for (temporary) peace, but thought better of it and am doing Currency instead. I'll need it badly once the cities get out of resistance and costs increase further. Then I need to get Sailing and get a settler off to that eastern island for better trade routes, although it will probably cost a bomb in maintenance.

There are some tiles to the west with commerce on them, which can't be worked from my continent, so there must be some land to the west. I'll a city to the west and hope a border pop means I can get a boat over there and hopefully make contact with some AIs. Not at all cool if I need astro to get proper trade routes going, and optics to meet the rest of the guys for tech trades.

Amazingly the Oracle hasn't gone yet, but I gave up on that a long time ago in favour of war. GLH has gone, in addition to GWall and the captured Stonehenge.

Finally, this may have been a bad mistake, but I didn't settle the southern spots yet, like gold and fur, because with cities that far away it would have taken much longer to get to HBR and HAs. I have a couple of settlers in production now, however, so one of them should get the gold spot.

Played a bit further, to 25AD, since we're out of anarchy then. 12 cities and not that far off 300 :science:
Spoiler :
It hurt, but I had to settle on top of the gold to be able to sail west after borders expanded. It was a good choice, because over there we found Sury and Peter. Annoyingly Sury beat me to that island, which is bloody marvellous (triple food), by 2-3 turns. Very frustrating. But I got the one to the east. Knew there was land to the south somewhere, but had to settle to grab the food, and there was also a passage to the north-east. Have located Mansa and Alex over there. One more AI left, but don't know who it is yet. All religions are in the east and the last AI, with nothing for Sury and Peter yet. Sury has declared on Peter, and Alex is plotting.

I built the Academy (in 1AD) and have just come out of anarchy after a triple civic switch, to HR+Buro+OR.

Mansa was willing to give me Ivory for Copper, and I also got Construction + Calendar from him in exchange for Civil Service, so we can now build elephants. The intended HE city will start on MoM instead though. Probably won't wage war for a while anyway, and units cost gold. Mansa founded Christianity, and started on Hagia or AP (probably AP) on turn 1, which I think is pretty unusual. "We have our reasons."

Mansa and Zara are ahead in the tech race, and Zara already had Feudalism when I met him around 200BC, which feels quite early for Immortal.

Overview map below, with what I know about the world so far in the mini-map. It looks like a pretty big map, with so much blackness.

Unlucky to have placed a city on top of Iron, as it's an excellent tile to work, but nothing to do about that. Quite nice mini-continent btw, with basically everything we need, even both marble and stone.

It has been a fun ride so far :)

Looking good Pangaea!
Spoiler :
Who built the Great Lighthouse? Maybe a few elephants could be worth it if you can get your hands on that. :yumyum:

Thanks :)
Spoiler :
Zara did, which is quite unfortunate because he has longbows. Have only played about 10 more turns this evening, but think I'll just fill out the land (done) and tech up a bit, then wage war later. Galley warfare is a pain anyway. Aksum is far away, but it sure would be a nice one to get, with GLH+Colossus.

Leaving for a week now, but intend to play this one out when I get back. It's an interesting map.

Hey, I'm new here. Love playing civ 4 and thanks to this forum I can now beat Emperor 80% of the time.
This game is my first on Immortal, and I axe rushed Roos, he fell pretty easy. Now its time to get my eco up again and meet the other civs, so I can get some trade going. Anyone got any tips?

@Yaboy - In isolation/semi isolation you should explore better. Most important is that you don't cut corners when exploring coast. Corners reveal the most important info. If you see a water tile that cannot be worked from a city anywhere on your continent (for example 2 tiles diagonally from closest land), but still shows a tile yield, that means it can be worked from another landmass. Settle a city nearby so that you can get a workboat over to the other landmass after border pop.

Hi guys.

First, the greatest score my normal game ever:banana::

Spoiler :
The game started with aggressive settling into America. Quickly it became apparent that we were alone in the continent. I thoroughly scouted the coast and saw ocean tiles which indicated there was a land relatively close. Therefore I was able to place cities at the spots which enabled me to reach the land after the border pop. That was game changing as I managed to get contact and trade routes with everyone but Monty pre Astronomy. Early demographics indicated that few or none AIs started coastal which made me go for a bit later GLH. I wanted to expand first before Roosy took all the places.

America was very generous and has built Mids together with MoM. All that was left for me was to take them. I attacked with cats and axes around 125BC. All of his cities were close and I have decided to go for three stacks. War was very quick and I killed off my only neigbour.

Shame that I don't have screenies from this period.

When cities came out of revolt, I triggered what was to be 60T Golden Age. Also, worth mentioning is that I haven't whipped in the ADs. This is the second game in a row where I put much more emphasis on workshops and Caste System and despite some mistakes made, the results are really really satisfying.

Diplo was all about befriending Zara and Mali to get trading partners, really easy when you adopt their religion.

Then I went for Cannons + Rifles + Cavalry + Airships and conquered the world.

Now a test for your Internet Service Provider:

If you ever looked at the pictures, you can see that this was multiple front war but always only one enemy at the time. The reason behind it is to get faster capitulations. Also, look for capitulation after every military win. Then hop into the boat with units who can move and sail to another target. don't heal outside of the boats. With cannons, even axes can do the job, so strength is not so relevant.

Also, some cities with 3 defenders were attacked directly from ships. Losses were minimal as AI keeps one high level unit and 2 LBs. If you declare and unload next to the city, it'll have 3 rifles and maybe even a 4th in that extra turn. You get a quick base for your Airships to soften those hill defenders in a tougher city.

It has taken me 25T to cap Russia, Khmer, Aztec, Mali, Ethiopia, China and kill Greece off on 4 different continents. Aggression in civ pays well.:scan:

Also, I really started prefering workshops in the ADs. You get 2T cavs on average while you still maintain economy. Although constant whipping is by no means powerful, it leaves a bitter feeling that your empire would collapse very moment after the win. This is much more satisfying.

that's a really long golden age. Hahaha I wonder if that's worth doing without the Mausoleum...

Without a MoM, maybe the last one would be too expensive regarding Great People.
GAge is more function of worked land, and a lot of land was worked. :)

Played to 1 AD - Monarch - Huts.

Spoiler :

Settled the PH Wine, then 3W1S. Then the River next to the Corn. Used the copper, and chopping to build barracks and Axes. Declared on Roos. Took two cities, but he built a wall in Washington, so I made him give me all his techs for Peace. During peace time, my economy was bad, but I got currency, and then Construction. Whipped a few Cats, and took Washington, then rolled him over. Roos dead ~ 1 AD. He hadn't built anything useful :( 9 cities, 4 of which I founded.

Trying to get to Lit so I can GLH.

Not quite sure where to go next, because of isolation, but I anticipate building up this continent while trying to make contact afar. Still need to tech Sailing....
