Noobie Q about Modding DLC Scenario

Hi Guys, Please don't stone me with your noobie seeking missiles!

I am trying to play around with the DLC Scenario 'A New World' Which is euro taking america. I have tried copying all the files from the DLC folder into a new mod project but so far it has not replicated the scenario when I select my mod. I basically want a copy of it so I can mess around without breaking the original scenario as it is a good base for what I want to do, mainly because it has less civs and units etc. so it is a good start place for making changes and eventaully adding content.

But I just end up with weird results, the last time I loaded it the mod only had four civs in it, none of which were in the DLC scenario and I cannot find a file in the DLC stuff that would actually make that happen..

I have done some Civ4 modding so I am familiar with xml, but I have tried 2-3 times to copy this DLC scenario without success, I am clearly missing something I just have no idea what!

Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance!
 
Copying a DLC scenario is a non-trivial process. Step-by-step instructions follow

Start ModBuddy
Create a new mod called "NewerWorld" (without the double quotes)

In the Solution Explorer (right hand pane) right-click the mod name, select Add, then Existing Item ...
Select ALL the xml, sql and lua files in "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\sid meier's civilization v\assets\DLC\DLC_02\Scenarios\NewWorldScenario" BUT NOT the .modinfo file
Click Add

Create a new xml file called NewerWorldText.xml containing the following

Set "Import into VFS" to true only for the following files
* NewWorld_Scenario_MapScript.lua

Under Actions, add OnModActivated -> UpdateDatabase entries for the following (in this order!)
* ChangeTurnIncrement.xml
* CivilizationOverride.xml
* NewMajorCivCities.xml
* RemoveModernEras.xml
* TechTreeUpdate.xml
* ScenarioText.sql
* NewCityStates.xml
* NewerWorldText.xml

Under Content, add a Custom entry with the following values (without the double quotes)
Name = "TXT_KEY_NEWERWORLD_SCENARIO_TITLE"
Description = "TXT_KEY_NEWERWORLD_SCENARIO_DESC"
File = "NewWorldScenarioLoadScreen.xml"

Under Content, add an InGameAddin entry with the following values (without the double quotes)
Name = "Turns Remaining"
Description = "Turns Remaining Counter"
File = "TurnsRemaining.xml"

Under Custom Properties, and an entry with the following values (without the double quotes)
Name = "Custom_Background_TXT_KEY_NEWERWORLD_SCENARIO_TITLE" (there is no space in TITLE - it is being added by the forum software!)
Value = "Scenario_NewWorld.dds"

Under Mod Info
Check "Supports Single Player" option
Uncheck "Supports Network Multiplayer" option
Uncheck "Supports HotSeat" option
Uncheck the three "Reload Xyz System" options
Check "Affects Saved Games" option (leave min compatible version as 0)
Check the "Hide Setup Game" option

Scroll back up to the top of the Mod Info tab and COPY the Mod ID (you can use the mouse cursor to select it and Ctrl-C to copy it)
Open the file NewWorldScenarioLoadScreen.lua and scroll down to line 67 (or so)
Overwrite the 02453135-2694-47f8-9690-29cca6cce199 value with your copied mod id
Save the file

Save the mod
Build the mod
Start Civ 5
Mods, Browse Mods, Enable the NewerWorld mod
DISABLE ALL OTHER MODS
Back, Single Player, Custom Game

Select "Conquest of the Newer World" (the panel on the right should display "Sail west fearless explorer!")

Load Mod (you should get the standard New World options)
Select your options, then Start Game

If you've done everything correctly you'll have a working copy of the New World scenario you can now start changing.

I'm not sure what your intention is, or how far you thought about what you're doing, but please be aware that you'll not be able to publish what you're modding, because it will either not work for the people or you'd have to release stuff for free which other people paid for...er...I guess you know what I mean.

(if that's just for your personal fun, then ignore what I said)
 
Yeah for now I am just messing around, if I did release it I would plan to rip out all of the 'extra' content like the new artwork etc. by the time I have something release worthy it would have (I think) none of the DLC content left. I just need something that is 'smaller' than the original game to work with, less civs and units etc. but eventually (If I get that far) everything within the original scenario will be gone/replaced, I just need something that has a good file structure for a 'smaller scenario' because my poor brain is too floppy to build a file structure from scratch :)

IMHO the DLC scenarios do NOT have a good file structure as a) they throw all the files into the same top-level folder - at the very least split them into sub-folders of XML, SQL, LUA, ART, MAPS and UI and b) they group unrelated "stuff" into the same file - check out everything in TechTreeUpdate.xml (it does far more than updating the Tech Tree, it doesn't even start with the Tech Tree changes!) - at the very least split buildings, civs, policies, units, etc into their own "Update" files (so CivUpdates.xml, UnitUpdates.xml, BuildingUpdates.xml, etc)

Look at the structure that is developed in the tutorial linked in my first post - that is a better starting point for a "good" (which will always be subjective) file/folder structure.

Yeah I didn't mean so much of how the folders and are organised, more that it is all there in terms of code, and it works! which is a good place to start for me :-)

as long as all the information and written code is there I can experiment with what does what and I can split up the code into different files and such, as well as adding and removing stuff, so I can see how modbuddy works as well and how different bits and pieces work.

with getting the DLC to work as a copy I knew I was missing something I just had no idea what :-P

Ok another question, if I want to implement new stuff, for instance add/remove a civ, by adding a civs.xml file for example, will I have to add anything to make my mod use the info in this new file, or will it do that automatically? I am still getting my head around exactly how modbuddy does things.
 
Kael's modding guide (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=385009) although out-of-date for some of the finer ModBuddy points, still covers most of the basics accurately - so you need to read that.

Any other points for basic adding of files to a scenario mod should be covered in my tutorial, so you'll almost certainly want to skim read that as well.

Hmmm ok I have been trying to do stuff after looking at the modding guides but I am not having success.

Right now I just want to see if I can change the names of the civs, I have added a civs xml file with the 6 relevant civs and a civstext xml file with the relevant text strings, but I am seeing no changes to the civs name. I have tried both the row format and the update/where format but neither work. I have added the 2 new xml file to the actions list (at the bottom of the list, should they be higher up?) I have tried setting the VFS setting to true in the hopes of it taking precedent over any existing game files, but every time i load the game, no change to the civs names... I am clearly missing something crucial with modbuddy, but I just cannot figure out what?

Do NOT set VFS to true for xml/sql files that update the database.

Have you checked the log files (specifically database.log and xml.log) for errors - and you do have logging enabled don't you!

And it'll help to workout what you are doing wrong if you post/include the two files you have created
 
ok here is the database.log file, I see it is talking about the rows I am working with not being unique. I assume I have the logging switched on properly as the log folder is full of logs... this could be an ASS-U-ME situation but I don't think so...
