Nostalgia for MtG

Most recently released set is Legions; Scourge will come out in a couple months. These are the last two expansions in the Onslaught block.

i heard they are bringing slivers back. about time. they made a huge mistake not including them in Exodus.

Slivers are back in Legions, and most of them are better than ever. But none of them can match Muscle Sliver or Crystalline Sliver.

I made a nasty little fun deck using slivers, rootwallas, and elves. it was green and red. fun as hell. i think i took it apart after a week but it had a nice record. kinda sucks when you've got so many slivers coming at you and you just can't block that one pumpable rootwalla.... :D

Alpha
Beta
Unlimited
Arabian Nights
Antiquities
Legends
Revised
The Dark
Fallen Empires
Homelands
Fifth Edition
Ice Age
Alliances
Mirage
Visions
Weatherlight
Tempest
Stronghold
Exodus
6th Edition
Urza's Saga
Urza's Legacy
Urza's Destiny
Mercadian Masques
Nemesis
Prophecy
7th Edition
Invasion
Planeshift
Apocalypse
Odyssey
Torment
Judgement
Onslaught
Legions
and soon Scourge
and after that 8th Edition

I think that this is a complete list of all MtG sets except for the Portal and Starter expansions, which are worthless anyway. The wordings are messed up and the cards from those sets are not tournament legal.

You can only pump the Rootwalla once per turn though.

yeah? so? early start for feeding time after your first strike, trampling, pumped up slivers can make it to the main meal. btw, i used both rootwallas. can't remember what the "newer" versions stats were. i think it was more expensive and much larger then the regular rootwalla.

Basking Rootwalla

G to cast 1/1

1G: Basking Rootawalla gets +2/+2 until end of turn. Play this ability only once per turn.

Madness 0

This one?

no, i think it was horned rootwalla or something. i think it was like a 4/3 to begin with.

Plated Rootwalla

4G to cast 3/3

2G: Plated Rootwalla gets +3/+3 until end of turn. Play this ability only once per turn.

This one?

My sliver deck was green blue and red plus the crystallines, with the mother sliver and the artifacts in there. Helps if you are not playing by the rules and can use dual lands...

My sliver deck (seems everyone has one) is 5-color and is just casual. If I had dual lands, I'd put them in. They aren't against the rules unles you're playing in a specific format.

What is all this nonsense? You mean, they made sets after Fallen Empires? Who knew!

Anyways, I started Magic right when Legends was running out and The Dark was coming in. Back then, you could still find Unlimited, Arabian Nights, and Antiquities boosters if you knew where to go. Man, we'd be trading around Moxes, Time Walks, Ancestral Recalls and the like - at one time I had a Time Walk, Timetwister, Ancestral Recall, and a Mox Ruby - over $500 worth of cards nowadays. A set of Moxes could be had for about $100, worth over $600 now.

I remember some crazy decks, too - one of mine was based around the Urza Lands, Mana Flares, and the Candelabra of Tawnos, which allowed for the production of unbelievable amounts of mana and the frying of basically anything in my path.

There was a comic store about a half hour from where I lived that would have Magic Sundays - they had a big room set up with tables and chairs, and people would show up to play Magic for 5 or 6 hours Sunday afternoon. It's not really a coincidence that I stopped playing when they sold that half of the store.

I only ever entered one tournament. It was at that card shop, and the tournament rules were that you could have any card you wanted, but only one of it (except basic land.) The tourney started around 10 AM, and went til after 9 at night, and of course I was one of the guys there the whole time - 11 hours of Magic. I took 3rd place in the tourney, my prize was 2 Antiquities boosters.

If I may say so, that is a rather low prize for 3rd place in 11 hours of Magic.

old cards rule, new cards suck, thats my general opinion of magic nowa days. i don't seem to play as much as i used too

If you don't play as much now, how can you say that the new cards are bad? Nowadays Magic is much more balanced and there are fewer broken cards and combos.

Darn, aren't there any other current players of Magic on this forum? I need to get Zarn in here for backup, I'm being doubleteamed by old-school players.

Just kidding. ;)

What I like about magic is that there are indeed these ancient arcanely powerful magic sets around out there. I can see both sides of the coin on this one- I am sure new magic is fulfilling in its way, but I sank over 4 thousand dollars into Magic in three years and got sick of the constant updates.

"Madness cost"? Come on, that was another thing I got sick of, new rules all the time. Sometimes they hit, but mostly they missed big time, that is, from the time of phasing onwards...

Phasing was the second worst mechanic ever. First is the "free" mechanic and third is shadow. Don't tell me that the new sets have bad mechanics; they rule compared to the older sets.

Phasing was indeed the worst.

By "free" mechanic, do you mean 0 casting cost spells? Or the spells that let you untap the mana cost after you cast them?

Shadow was kind of utile, especially if you play in the big sea of cards and no one is going to have a blocker...

I don't know the new mechanics very well, but "Madness" really does seem utterly useless... when is it you are supposed to play the cost? When you have to discard the card? Which would be when?
