not understanding embarking

I want to get to that barbarian encampment...just...right...there, but so how do I do it again?

I just researched Optics and my swordman are standing on the beach but they don't have any experience so...they have to kill somebody else first or I have to build a barracks and a new unit or maybe adopt new policies?

Will somebody please help me bring the benefits of civilization to a small offshore island?

If you move the unit into territory you own they will automatically get the upgrade for free.
