The notification log shows events and notifications from your turn, however it is linked to the big flashing icons on the side of the screen. If the icon is still up you can access this big flashing icon by entering the log and clicking on the entry (wow, so much more convenient than clicking on the big icon!). If the icon is no longer up you can click on the log entry but get nothing, so you can't get any more detail on the events you can't read about any more through the flashing icons. This means it has almost entirely redundant functionality.
(I know I shouldn't put this sort of comment in, but it does seem like the design required a notification log and the programmers put in the easiest functionality they could provide rather than anything useful to the user.)
Their also seems to be no combat log. This would be genuinely useful as at the start of the turn you get a list of messages on screen about which units were bombarded, which units took damage, and that fishing boats were pillaged, but those messages vanish completely and you're left wondering what the heck went on in your opponent's turn. The window does scroll to give you a view of combat events in an opponent's turn but it sometimes scrolls to show a barbarian galley being shot by your city state ally, half way across the world from where you're fighting world war I. A log of those combat events, just showing the same text as shown at the start of the turn with a click to zoom over the relevant hex, would be genuinely useful. It wouldn't even need to hold the combat events for more than one turn.
