I used to remember how wonders that provided happiness boost in the entire continent used to be so good in the previous Civ games. Maybe it is my illusion, but now in Civ4, almost nobody talks about Notre Dame. Even I don't build it in my games... in fact, I can't remember the last time I actually built this thing.

So what is it about this wonder that almost nobody talks about it anymore? Is it because it requires Engineering? Is it because its meager happiness bonus is not worth the hammers? Or is it something else?

I for one, find it awkward that this wonder is unlocked with Engineering. If my memory serves me correct, it used to be unlocked with Theology?

I for one, wish that perhaps the happiness bonus was +2 instead of just +1... maybe then, it might be worth the hammers? At least the Hanging Gardens is unlocked after Math... ugh!

In a time frame where Monarchy civic simply erases the happiness cap, ND wonder, even with stone, is redundant. Of course, if for fail gold purpose, it's all right, but since Engineering tech is one of the tech almost never self-tech (except special cases like the Engineering Rush) because it is highly placed in AI priorities, thus traded, by the game gotten, the ND is gone to some random AI.

In the end, a civic and a tech location are the reasons.

In a mod where happy flux controls would be more stringent (Realism Invictus comes to mind), there I sometimes ponder the use of a wonder like that. In that mod even more for particular reasons, but I won't precise more bc irrelevant in base BTS subforums.

Just built it in my previous attempt where i ended up with 60+ cities on a single continent. Other than that, i'd rather acquire it from AI.

Well, it's like... Now you've got engineering, why spend hammers on a mostly junk wonder when you could build tons of trebs and go kill people?

Good wonder in space ship game - you will abandon Monarchy anyway. Useless in conquest/domination one.

Having been born not too far away from Notre Dame, and while the 2 words combination is kind of magical to the ear, I've never built the church.

Not sure it makes people happy but thousands of bad photos are taken of it everyday and thousands of pigeons s(h)it on it every day.

Sorry for the digression. Hope no one got offended.

It's really expensive for what it does. Even with stone you'll need at least 7 cities needing the extra happiness to make it worth the hammers.

I would support a buff to +2:)

From my games, AI always gets engineering first and they like building that wonder ASAP so no point for me to build that in the first place. It's not as good as the Oracle or Pyramids though so why bother?

Notre Dame is already buffed to +2 happiness !

Pretty sure that the timing for this buff was when it was moved from music to engineering
