Nuclear Plant vs. Hydro Plant

What is the difference??? I see from Civlopedia that they both provide clean power but Nuclear requires Uranium and there is a chance of meltdown. Hydro is 50 hammers cheaper and no risk, so why would I want a Nuclear plant?

Also has anyone had a Nuclear meltdown? What were the effects on the city and surrounding area?

Because you can't build a Hydro plant if your city isn't near a river.

Now you know why the Three Gorges Dam World Wonder is so important.

It gives you a Hydro Plant in a city not connected to a river.

So can I destroy a Nuclear Plant after building the Three Gorges Dam.

good question.

In Civ3 nuke plants were set to give +150%, vs hydro - and Hoover Dam - set for +50% bonuses.

However, according at least to the XML files, there are no production bonus differences between any of the types of power plants in Civ4.

So it appears that Three Gorges gives you power for all cities, so I see no reason not to sell/destroy any plants.

Of course an easy way to find out is to just save the game, then destroy one, and see if the production time for some item changes.

Eventually how can I do this  (destroying, selling buildings? I didn't found the option to this till now)

I had a nuclear power plant melt down on me in my very first game in my capital. Its pretty much the same as getting nuked as far as i can tell. My city pop was halved and there was radiation all alround my city. Also I lost lots of buildings. <sigh> I was in the middle of a space race too. :(

lol. I'm sorry, but that's awesome.

My first game, on Settler, my one nuclear plant melted. The "small" chance seems absurdly high - "small" should mean "one chance in a 100 for the entire game" * difficulty where noble = 1.

As it stands now I'll never use them because you can't get rid of them and that means they will meltdown eventually, which could mean instant loss if it's your capital city, for example.

I forsee some XML tweaks to improve the power plant buildings - more % for nuclear, smaller chance of meltdown, higher cost, etc. Adding Oil-fired plants that pollute slightly less than coal but are more expensive.

More testing needed!

You can't sell the buildings in Civ4 and it doesn't seems to matter anyway.

1) They don't incur maintenance
2) Once hydro is built the coal plant is still there but produce no unhealthiness
3) This is one thing I'm unsure, I built a nuclear plant once but finished my Three gorges dam b4 it melt down, but for the next 40 turns no melt down occurred and I won the game. So I would assume that the melt down is gone once hydro is in place.

[Arrgh original post lost with Site lagging out]

Anyway...

I heard from my Physics Teacher (he worked in a Nuclear Power Station), that it is impossible for a Nuclear Plant to blow up like a Nuke. So, that your other buidlings were lost, besides the Plant itself, is a bit unrealistic.

But, I always wondered how all this replacing from Wonders worked in civ3 even. (I'm still waiting for CIV IV to be released here)
