Excerpts:
State Comptroller Alan Hevesi publicly apologized Thursday for a "beyond dumb" remark about a fellow Democrat putting "a bullet between the president's eyes."

Hevesi called a mea culpa press conference hours after putting his foot in his mouth at the Queens College commencement.

"I apologize to the president of the United States" and to the fellow state politician, Sen. Charles Schumer, Hevesi said. "I am not a person of violence.

According to a videotape of the speech, Hevesi said:

"The man who, how do I phrase this diplomatically, who will put a bullet between the president's eyes if he could get away with it. The toughest senator, the best representative. A great, great member of the Congress of the United States."

So, suggesting a Senator wants to assassinate the President is being diplomatic? I guess New York IS a tough place...

Wrong noun, Mr. Sharpe. ;)

The American politicians haven't changed much since 1865.

John Wilkes Booth wasn't a Democrat.

I disagree. Here in California, Democrats at the state level may view illegal aliens as part of their voter base, and try to cast votes in the other house of the legislature posing as a Republican, but I haven't heard any call for assassination.

Yes, I remember this story. Glad he apologized, since it wouldn't be prudent for that statement to be left hanging. However, Hevesi was completely out of line. Not only for this, but also marring the party conventions that took place this week in New York, even though this took place nowhere near the Democratic convention in Buffalo.

Yeah, the site where I first heard of this story was treating the quote as an actual call for assassination.

I thought the part of the quote where he says he wants to put it "diplomatically" was hilarious. I'd hate to hear him speak bluntly.

Sorry, I just don't buy that Alan Hevesi is a tough guy. He might just have mentally gone over the edge. It seems that commencement addresses do that often enough.

Although, in certain parts of Brooklyn...that would be highly diplomatic....:p

Yup, you nailed us there. Us Democrats, we'z all fer some assasinatin' ever now and agin.

I think the 'Democrats haven't changed much since 1865' refers to the fact that the South, a region that was dominated by the Democratic party, attempted to seperate from the Union and the assassination of the president of the Union would be seen as a rebellious act against Union authorities.

He actually probably was a Democrat. There weren't a whole lot of Republicans in the south at the time.

I don't see the pun...

George Galloway recently said that a suicide bomb attack on TB would be morally justified.

If he had said that there was a moral equivalence between the US/UK attack on the Iraqi government and a suicide bomb attack on TB I'd agree, but he didn't quite say that and there has been a huge storm about it here.

Personally, I'd say that it's time for liberals to get tough, but perhaps this isn't the right formula. The guy (Hevesi) is a liberal?

There weren't a lot of Democrats in the South either. You've got to remember that the Democrats and Republicans were Union parties. Booth was a Confederate.

It's true that there weren't many Republicans in the South. According to one book, in 1860 Lincoln did not get a single vote in Mississippi. However, after the Confederacy was established, there weren't any political parties in the Confederacy. So rmsharpe's attempt to sneer at Democrats falls flat on its face, at least for those who actually know some history.

I don't know about that, but the Republicans sure have. I wish current Republicans would quit speaking of Lincoln as if he were part of their legacy, because it's a legacy in name only.

Well, the guy chose his "praise" pretty well, given that Schumer has a New York City concealed carry permit despite trying to take them away from everyone else.

 in england, europe, this politician called galloway said that it would be morally good to assassinate tony blair.
