Où sont mes vins?

Good set. I'll see what I can do about Greece. The appearance of the Great Profit was actually most fortunate. With the shrine and wall street in Calais we can support far-flung wine colonies by aggressively spreading confucianism.

One thing we need to agree on before I play. If we do get to liberalism first, what shall be the free tech? I'd suggest Military trad.
A good ol' cavalry rampage, eh?

I was thinking military tradition too - it's worth a fair number of beakers, has decent trade value and helps our army. The only realistic alternatives would be economics for a free trade mission (mmm...upgrades) and astronomy for early observatories. That's much more attractive on a continents map than in this situation though.

I think the Persian wine colony should be the last we go for as it'll put off war with Cyrus for as long as possible. Vicky hates us anyway so fighting her's no biggie and Hatty's got so much wine we're going to have to steamroller her anyway.

Yes, economics seems like a decent second choice to me also. Trade missions are sweet but it's not as we have lots to upgrade anyway. So Military trad. it is.
Cavalry will let us to poach Vicky's grapes with relative ease. If Hatty doesn't go after milt'ry techs in the near future, we might get to trounce on her too with unsupported cavalry.

Although a cav offensive is going to be the best method of subduing our opponents, to keep with the spirit of the variant, I would think we need to build at least 3 musketeers.....

Turns played, report coming tomorrow due to time restraints.

And who could forget the musketeers? Besides, they make an excellent mobile attack force when coupled with cavs.

Okay, sorry to begin the report by complaining but this just won't do.

We're running bureaucracy, Paris is well below the happy/health caps, has lots of undeveloped grassland and is almost stagnated at size 13? I mean, production is important but growth and commerce should come first. Espcecially now that we're entering the age of rather expansive techs.

I made quite a change of gears in the first turns. After looking at our stack in Athens, I brought military builds to a screeching halt, the only exception being Aubagne with a couple of crossbows and 'pults. Grocers are in favor now, bringing in cash and health, two aspects in which we are rather lacking.

This baby helped us a lot by cutting our defict by 13 gpt. Encouraged by higher wages, soldiers of le Légion once again stepped onto Greel soil.

What were they fighting for?

The :smoke: moment: Alex landed a settler/longbow pair onto a grassy plain next to our combat2 knight. Guess.

The :gripe: moment: A combat4 maceman and a combat2 'phant came to pillage our wineries near Pharsalos. They were stopped only after sacrificing a
HA, a spear and a pike.

The "phew" moment: Alex tried to land a HA/'pult pair near Reims. I took a bit of a chance and sunk them with our galley for I do so detest pillagers.

Now, despite the war going so well, I signed this deal.

"Why, you slacker?", I hear you cry. Because of the paysans, I tell you. You see, Vicky grabbed education right after us and so the race to liberalism was in full swing. And the gormless beet-eaters chose that very moment to go on strike, to plunge a dagger into His Majesty's back, because of their "war weariness.

Even though the paysans weren't willing to sacrifice themselves for the glory of France, the forests around Paris were, and so this wonder compöeted in 1400 Anno Domini, launching la belle France into a golden age.

Things to do

- pray that we snag liberalism first. If that is achieved, pick mil.trad., amass cavalry, drool.

- finish Alex for proper. Our main stack is in Pharlasos, while a smaller one has been gathered in Versailles Thermopylae.

- put the GA to a good use.

Cochon, you're up.

Let's try again

Well, being full of enthusiasm for checking out the save, you can imagine my disappointment that the link doesn't seem to be working. Maybe the file server is down - I'll try again later

EDIT: Is it just me or does the Taj Mahal look vaguely reminiscent of the Sacre Couer? (if you squint a bit)

Cochon, you appear to be lacking a bit. Some lind of a status report would be nice.

... and this from the Loup that left us guessing for weeks what Louis got for Christmas.....

I'm afraid RL is intruding on Civ time a bit this week. I played a couple of turns the other night, but haven't managed to take it much further. Currently we are 1 turn from Liberalism (and therefore guaranteed to be first there).

I'm away this weekend, so the next up (? Sommelier) may as well take it from there

Silence, you fool! I'm the captain. :mischief:

Thanks for the report. Sommelier, take this up for the weekend if you have time.

My house is a building site until Monday so I'd rather wait for Cochon to finish if that's OK.

Okay. Cochon, finish your turns at your leisure.

Okay, I think that an almost two-week lull is enough.

Sommelier, can you pick it up from the last save during this weekend if there's no word from Cochon?

Apologies - I didn't see your first message and assumed we were waiting for the next to play.

I can play later this week if you like - but perhaps we should re-assess everyone's availability?

Okay, how's this?

Sommelier - up
Loup - on deck
Cochon

OK. Will grab the last save Cochon posted and play 15 from there.

Should be able to play and post by tomorrow night.

A bientot!

Alex is dead, we were first to liberalism and have both cavalry and the first of our Musketeers (Porthos).

I focused on a few infrastructure builds in our oldest cities to try and bolster our economy somewhat. We're currently set to research economics for the extra trade route, but feel free to change it. The beakers we have invested were one turn's worth during the golden age as nobody else had the tech and I figured we could use a merchant if possible, but Vicky got there first.

She's at least 4 techs away from having redcoats, so we should probably get some more cavalry together and head for her wines sooner rather than later.

Revolting to free religion might help us out too - I didn't want to during my set as most of it was taken up with the golden age; finishing off Alex was a very swift job. I kept one of his cities by mistake, which was a bit :smoke: but hopefully it won't end up costing us too much in maintenance.

Play me.

Cool. I think that the plan is to go whack Vic. I don't think we'll be wanting to keep too many cities. Mayhap some choise sites and, naturally, the wine colonies.

Will play&post before the weekend.
