OB02 - Giving is Better than Receiving

Thanks for the invite but I've spent the morning on SGOTM and I'm working afternoon/evening so I'll wait my turn.

Good news, we got our first chance to give a present, and of course I forgot to get a screenshot, but we gave our Indian friends a present with Open Borders, and they were happy.

We also met another of our opponents:

We also founded Stonehenge, discovered Iron Working, and got a Settler, Warrior and Worker ready to build our third city. Writing is one turn away.
I will suggest placing it at the Iron to the north.

The iron site with sugar up north (is it the north pole?) looks good for settler. We need Polytheism and Monotheism before we can pop Theology. Unless there are worker techs we need (maybe Agriculture) we should head down this path

Got it. Looked at it. Let's grab the iron site then build an army!!:D
Anyone who makes a demand of us is obviously naughty not nice so should be killed as soon as possible! :p

Couldn't see how many turns I was meant to play so I played 24 up to 900bc.

Mao is naughty.

Alex is naughty.

Writing discovered. Start polytheism.

Monte is naughty.
oz30000.jpg

Munich founded in jungle near iron.

Liz is naughty.

Discover polytheism. Start masonry (1000bc).

Masonry discovered. Start monotheism.
oz60000.jpg

Very quiet set. No barbs. No fighting. Built couple of chariots, couple of barracks, starting on axes.

Looks like Monotheism has already been discovered, which is good, there can only be one Xmas. We pop the GP in 5 turns which will give us our Christmas.

Monty is the grinch and has elephants, do we want to build a few swords and take him down.

Normally I'd suggest Alphabet as a research path but want to avoid this one as long as possible, maybe Agriculture/Pottery then Mathematics/Construction?

Plan:
Avoid Alphabet.
Get a Priest to lightbulb Theology... (Need Meditation and maybe Priesthood)
Prolong the holidays and fill some stockings.
Build an army to acquire some gifts for ourselves.

825BC:
Berlin Axe > Sword

800BC:
Munich Barracks > Axe

775BC:
Got a Priest in Berlin, he'll lightbulb meditation (I'll store him for Christianity or a cathedral)

750BC:
Berlin Sword > Axe

725BC:
Monotheism > Meditation (hope we can Lightbulb Theology after)

700BC:
Whip Barracks in Hamburg

675BC:
Barracks in Hamburg > Chariot
We get Buddhism

650BC:
Berlin Sword > Settler (for Pigs/Rice Hill site)
Hamburg Chariot > Axe
Munich Axe > Sword

625BC:
Meditation > Fishing (for pottery)
Great Priest now lightbulbs Priesthood :( We need pottery to plant them on FPs and up commerce.

550BC:
Fishing > Pottery

525BC:
SANTA TIME!! :santa2:

Civ4ScreenShot0097.jpg

Merry Christmas Lizzy!
Alex gets -1...

500BC:
Attack barbarian archer with Chariot (86% odds, but retreats) Second archer wins.

Situation at 500BC:

Civ4ScreenShot0098.jpg

Notes:
-Units are built for army.
-Settler almost ready for pigs/rice/ hills site. Nice production of units possible there.
-We need to start building cottages for commerce
-After Pottery, Priesthood seems like a good option (might lightbulb cristianity)
-Or we spend 25 turns on Theology and use priest for Cathedral.

Surely need priesthood next to lightbulb theology because Christianity is a significant element of the variant.
I'm also wondering why we're avoiding alphabet; one way not to give away techs is to trade them widely before anyone can ask.

Nice work!

Priesthood is a cheap tech, so I'd research that and then lightbulb Theology. We're very likely to get a 2nd prophet for Church of Nativity.

Our first real gift had to be p*ssing of a nutcase

True but we'd have to make sure we trade all (including Alphabet) as for sure the doorbell would be ringing with much greater frequency after this.

Might still be a good idea after we get Priesthood.

I should be able to play tomorrow evening (UK time).

Pretty sure they can not demand techs if we dont have alphabet (unless they have it themselves)

Re Church of Nativity: if we use prophet to lightbulb theology and get Christianity then it might make sense to build a temple in Berlin and run a priest for 5gpp. It doesn't take much MM to pop another prophet while maybe running a couple of scientists elsewhere to pop a GS.
Remconius: fair point re alphabet. What about heading towards construction and building an army of theocratic catapults?

500BC-200BC

Christmas:
On the 25th of December, a star shone on a manger and when the Sheppard boy visited it, he found a baby who was named Jesus.
Spoiler :
(as an educational note- In Islam, the young prophet is born to Maryam (Mary) as she grips a tree-branch. The babe, through the power of the angels, immediately begins to speaks and tells his frightened mother not to worry and that he will be a great prophet.)

zzz01-christmas.JPG

Research:

We finished pottery and we started priesthood. Once priesthood was completed Moses visited a newborn babe who was birthed in a manger. The angels rejoiced and Christianity was founded. The three wise-men decided to learn how to farm (we need it for our hammer-rich cities). Once that was completed , they started work on the alphabet.

Production:

  • Hamburg completed its axeman and built a worker (whipped). It is currently building a spearman and maturing our empire’s first cottages.
  • Berlin completed its settler and built a swordsman. It also started production of a granary prior to switching to a temple (while waiting for the missionary to arrive). It is currently building that Christian temple.
  • Munich built two swordsmen and on the last turn whipped a settler. It will be done next turn. We should farm those sugar until we get calendar to make better use of this city (and whipping).
  • Once Cologne was founded, I set it to build a library. We could run two farms (one would be rice) and two scientists if we want to farm some scientists (what I was thinking), or we could cottage up the site and get some commerce out of it.

Christmas Colonies:

Cologne was built as can be seen in the following screenshot. I’ve also marked potential settling sites for the settler to be built next turn in Munich.

zzz02-citysites.JPG

  • My favourite sites use our culture-producing creative trait to poach a couple gold tiles from Mansu. It also uses the pig tile for lots of food.
  • The second city site includes lots of floodplains and could be used as a cottage-site. It also nets our empire a deer resource.
  • The third city would make a great cottage spam site and is found to the north of Asoka.
  • Lastly, we could poach silver from the Chinese.

Naughty Boys and Girls:

  • The Greeks built the pyramids.
  • The English develop Confucianism.
  • The Indians built the Hindu shrine.
  • No one made any demands.

Thoughts:
  • Potentially we could build up to four more cities. We have a small army but our enemies have culture and i suspect we need catapults prior to facing them. I also think that we should build three cities in the meantime (all but the silver city near the Chinese).
  • Our economy could use the gold to the north of our empire as well as cottages.
  • We definately need more workers. I built one but we need much more then one (especially since we are only now getting pottery and farming).
  • Do we want to adopt Christianity and an associated religious civic?

Here is the save.

Nice report Immac,

I like the gold site in the north, mainly as we may poach some elephants away from Monty, who we will be warring with at some stage.

I'd say we adopt Christianity, build up the army and wait for catapults.
