OFW1 Science and Industry

I love the Immortals, maybe thats because way back in ? They were responsible for my 1st win ever! I think we should not worry too much about researching IW right away, just build warriors for future upgrade.

With the Barbs being on restless, we should be able to get some good stuff out of huts. I don't really know if we should research at max or if we go for the 40 turn research and say try to head for Writing and/or map making(Great library and lighthouse). or go for mysticism for the Oracle. We already are able to build the Pyramids and the Colossus. or no research?

So, mad bax, you agree with me that the spot SW of starting spot looks ideal, albeit difficult being our capitol. ( I did not even think of using/wasting a gl to relocate capitol, maybe we will be lucky and get lots:))

my thoughts are move settler SW and settle. build warriors for exploring and 1 to protect capitol, until we can get 1st settler out.
then Colossus, its only 200 shields.

I have never gone for a 20K before, so I'm not sure if we should get say a Library 1st(they are cheap for us scientiific folk:D )

Give me feed back.

If anyone wisshes to go 1st, then take it otherwise I will go probably tomorrow.

The game seems to be filling up well--great!

I'd be glad to start us off, although I won't play until you (OFW) declare the game officially under way. I think the interesting question right now is, do we have the nerve to begin with a three-turn settler march along the river? This would let us use the tile SW of our starting point for a culture city which wouldn't be our capital--the ideal situation. I'd be pleased to hear what the rest of you think about this gamble. In particular, has anyone ever lost his starting settler to a barbarian attack in the first five turns?

One Fast Warrior, I can see the screenshot you posted, but I can't download the save. I was able to download the ST2 starting position, so I don't think the problem is at my end, new though I am to this. Has anyone else been able to download this game's save?

Okya, Northern pike, I put a different save file at the end of the 1st message of this thread. It hopefully will work. I have not recieved confirmation from the 2 pm's so If you want to start.. Then go for it. We can fill the other positions while we are going through the 1st 80 turns. I personally have never moved more than 1 square from any start position, so I don't know if barbs would kill us. I like the idea of going up the river, just hope it does not cost us too much lost time.

I will not be able to play turns until Thursday night due to previous plans. So I have a tentative order for us in the 1st post.

The new save works properly--thanks. I'll play the first twenty turns now.

@Northern Pike. If you could post a pic when you put up the save. I'd like to see how it looks out there:).

Here's the position after twenty turns--I hope. A proper report follows below, but I'd appreciate quick feedback on whether I've uploaded the thing successfully.

3050 B.C.

You uploaded it fine. I think I'm up. If I am I will play 24 hrs after Northern Pikes report is posted.

THE FIRST MILLENNIUM

4000: I decide to move our settler three tiles upriver, so that we can use the chosen site for our culture city without its being our capital. Moving the settler inland and north should also allow us more first-ring cities in the end, given that we're starting near the South Pole.

I'm not worried about the loss of time as such, since it's only two turns. If it turns out that we can't move three lousy squares without being attacked by barbarians, then I'm the *.

4000-3950: I move our settler and our worker northwest along the river and make some delightful discoveries: grassland cattle, grassland wheat, and a gold hill. The river is disappointingly short, though.

3900-3850: We reach our destination unmolested by barbarians, and found Persepolis on a splendid site: grassland cattle, grassland wheat, on a river, on a hill. Warrior begun. 100% research on Pottery started.

3750: Our admirably industrious worker completes his first mine.

3700: Persepolis produces its first warrior, and he begins exploring.

3600: Our warrior discovers a game/forest tile four squares northwest of Persepolis.

3350: We pop our first goodie hut, five squares west of Persepolis. Nubian settler!! Now we can do things properly in Persepolis, building a granary before any settlers, and still found our culture city very early.

3150: We discover Pottery. It's not obvious what we should research next, but I choose Ceremonial Burial at the highest rate we can manage without running a deficit, on the grounds that our cultural goal requires early temple construction.

We spot our second goodie hut, four tiles east of Persepolis, but I'm going to leave it unpopped until we've founded our second city, to preserve the possibility that we might get another settler.

General: We have met no other civilizations, encountered no barbarians, and spotted no luxuries.

FOR THE NEXT PLAYER:

Our settler is on the site selected for our culture city. Needless to say, you'll want to found the city before entering the goodie hut.

If you don't like my choice of CB as our present research target, you can change it without much being lost, as we're only two turns into this tech run. (Bear in mind, though, the nuance that you can't get the tech you're researching from a hut.) If you stick with CB, I assume you'll want to arrange a granary pre-build for the culture city's temple.

I have Persepolis set up to produce one more warrior (this interturn, so make your decision immediately) before starting on its granary, and I'm also moving our westernmost warrior back towards the city, to provide a garrison of three during the vulnerable granary-building period. This is cautious play, and if you're feeling bold you could keep exploring with the western warrior or change P. to granary production right now.

Persepolis is already at +5 food, so our worker should probably mine the cow, not irrigate it. Sorry if this is glaringly obvious.

Good luck! Thanks to the hut settler, this is obviously a promising start.

OneFastWarrior, I have no notion of how to take a screenshot, I'm afraid. Is there some guide to this, similar to cromagnon's invaluable sticky on uploading?

Mad-bax, thanks for confirming the success of my upload. That question-mark icon which gets attached to new uploads is manifestly unnerving to the beginner.

Sweeet a settler from our 1st hut.. yeah!:D ! nice set of opening turns!, you are up mad-bax, if that's where you want to be? I chose to play 3rd because I won't be able to play until tomorrow night

Speaker, how do you reduce the size of a picture. (sorry if this seems like a dumb question, but I have never played around with pictures very muchand have not taken the time to figure it out)

Northern Pike, the screenshot post instructions are also in Cromagnon's post just below the save game part.

And if anyone is just hanging around checking the game out, We still need 1 or 2 more to join our quest!, don't be shy, show yourself;)

btw, I think I may have accidentally left accelerated production on? I think that is the way I played my last game and I did not even think to look at or change when doing settings for this game.

I am okay with that, and I like the start and would really hate to reload, so, I hope your all cool with that.

sorry, my bad, like I said my 1st sg game, but I'm sure it will still be fun and.....

lets go kick some tail!!:)

I've never used accelerated production, so I don't know what to look for, but the first twenty turns seemed entirely normal; tiles produced the usual number of shields under despotism, the granary cost sixty shields, and so on.

Thanks to all for the advice on screenshots. I greatly appreciate how helpful people are on this board.

Hey its still the 31st! I'll have to wait till tonight. Sorry. The post will be here at 10pm BST. :)

I'm on a training course so can't play during the day today.

cool, if you have your report and the save up tonight, I can play anytime late Thursday or anytime Friday.

Somewhat belatedly, the 3050 B.C. screenshot:

mad-bax turn log.

3050: The capital is a beautiful 4 turn settler factory (or soon will be). :goodjob:
Take decision to switch from warrior to settler.

3000: Pasargadae founded. -> warrior. Will be our 20K city.
Hut popped for barbs.

2950: Warrior killed by barbs. :(

2900: Science to 90%

2850: Explore

2800: Explore

2750: Pasargadae warrior -> Collosus

2710: Pop Hut for Barbs.
Research Mysticism at 100%

2670: Found Susa: Spot chosen gets game and allows for RCP should you want to go that way OFW.

2630: Explore

2590: Explore.

A bit uneventful I'm afraid. We need to mine a couple of Tiles for the capital so it can turn out settlers in 4 turns. We need to mine all the BG's around Pasargadae ASAP too, so Susa should probably finish it's warrior then start a worker.

The lack of luxuries anywhere near us is a real concern, and will easily balance out our good starting position.

I think we should concentrate on getting Collosus, Oracle and Great Library before putting the temple in. It would be far better to get these three wonders than to miss one of them by a few turns because we built a temple that we would have got anyway, if you see what I mean. I would wait until we have republic and buy a temple, and a library for that matter. If we can get Hanging gardens too, then we will get a good finish.

Other than the luxury situation, it all looks good.

This is the save.

Here is a picture.
