Well, I just managed to get PTW here in Germany yesterday. Only got it because the English CD is also included (pretty nice of them! [dance] .

Anyway, because I thought it would be a while yet I haven´t been reading the threads. So a few quick questions.

1) What is the consensus about the new civs and the new special units (I am playing the vikings at the moment - they look pretty exciting with their special)?

2) What are the big changes cf Civ III version 1.16 (I was playing that as I didn´t like the rampant tech trading in the later patches)?

3) What sort of strategies are we using and how does it vary as compared to before?

So, basically I am asking all about the game and how to play the game! :spank: but I think it is really the differences and new stuff that I want.

Thanks

I like all the new civs and new UU's, even though I haven't yet played as all the old ones.

PTW is much like the 1.29f patch, you will have to deal with the "rampant trading". However, you will now pay more for things rather than the AI paying less this (again like 1.29f) , IMO, leads to a more balanced game.

Other than that not much, the AI has changed its military style a bit, but is still not very smart in that regard.

With MP getting many bad reviews, I gather you don't think it worth $30 - or do you?? The Diplomatic/Trade AI is pretty much the same it appears, which is too bad.

It 's seems to be a bit harder.

City trading ( giving back a recently captured big city for 3 smaller ones ) isn't an option any more, I don't know when in which patch they applied this. I jumped from an unpatched Civ3 to PTW.

With Hordes of Gallic Swordsmen, Celts are a awesome power which allow you to expand and conquer in ancient times.

It is worth $30 to me, no question. Lets see PTW or a cheap pair of shoes -> PTW. PTW or rent 10 movies -> PTW. PTW or go have 4 beers at a bar -> PTW. etc. etc. etc.

The AI does defend its cities better than it used to and a few other things. There have been improvements, but warfare is a hard thing to program an AI to do as well as a human (well some humans anyway).

Re Henry_X: City trading was out well before 1.29f, if you went right from unpatched to PTW then you gained _alot_ IMO.

I like PTW. I play it pretty much exclusively. I like the new civs a lot too, but I"m not sure that the AI for the new civs is any good. In all of my games (warlord-regent) the Celts and the Vikings always get EMBARRASINGLY CRUSHED. Always. Anybody else notice that?

Funder that's because they both have civ-specific abilities which lead them into getting behind in techs. And when you have spearmen defending cities against cavalry you know you're f-cked.

Ihmothep, go to the site, click the " Civilization Fanatics' Center " link at the bottom of the page. There's a list of the new civ's and their units.

I'm finding I like the new civs better or making more of an effort to play the new ones when I start a new game

Observations: AI defends its cities a little better but still not able to deal with human effectively (like attacking from 2 fronts etc.. )

some of the new civs have better UU's I like Sipahi a lot...
I think we can add Korea, and Spain to the list of civs that need better UU

The addition of stock exchanges is a welcome one, more gpt is good :D

I've yet to build internet or worry about a lot of modern stuff since I'm more apt to win a domination victory at that point (if I hadnt already )

I see the AI builds radio towers for every city whereas I just make sure my best cities get 'em.

I've also not seen the AI use Airfields... My question is why would you? Build a SAM site and setup some fighters in the city and you are good to go... I'd build airfields if I could put a sam battery right next to it

Airfields are useful because they can replace a cities airport-- they don't cause pollution. Also airfields work well for airlifting units from outskirts and near enemy cities.

Unique Units:

Ansar Warrior - Arabs
Berserk - Vikings
Conquistador - Spain
Gallic Swordsman - Celts
Hwach'a - Koreans
Keshik - Mongols
Numidian Mercinary - Carthaginians
Sipahi - Ottomans
