on-line play only?

Not real happy about this Steam business. if the game was purchased on-line is there anyway to play the game without logging on to Steam or am I stuck with having to be on-line to play? I can't seem to locate the Civ 5 file on my hard drive.

In Steam, click on the tab "File" - then Go Offline
