On the use of "ciV" as an abbreviation for Civilization V

Do you think the abbreviation "ciV" for Civilization V should be encouraged or discou

Yep. That's just it. Some people seem really upset about people using ciV. Let them use it. It isn't wrong, contrary to what some people may think. It is easy to tell the difference between cIV and ciV.

If you want to use Civ V or Civ 5, go right ahead.

So, I'd appreciate it if none of the zealots told me I was "doing it wrong" anymore. I have never told anyone that Civ V or Civ 5 is wrong. I just prefer ciV.

That's all I'm going to say on the matter.

I don't like it myself. I have to stop and take a second look at the abbreviation every time it appears (unless it's obvious from the context), to see whether it says cIV or ciV... And I don't really see any good arguments pro this.

I like Civ5 or civ5. No confusion there.

Seconded:goodjob:

I agree. At first it annoyed me, but after a few times of seeing ciV you start to remember what it means, so live and let live I say.

To me Civ will always be where the addiction started and all those putting CiV or CIV then I consider these to be just typos & they really mean the original Civilizations game in all it's glory. Civ5/Civ 5 is how I will see this title.

It's all semantics really and there will always be people on all sides of the fence.

Still, if you were to google a thread/post/strategy article, that would be a lot easier if "Civ5" was used instead of ciV. Seeing as Google (or any other search engine I know of) don't care about case. Civ, cIV, CIV and ciV would all be the same to them...

Let the majority decide. If you don't like it then start your own boards and use whatever you want.

Just curious. Will you be following your own advice? ;)

Disclaimer: In fairness to Thormodr, I am taking the comment out of context (he was talking about the icon for civ 5) but I was nonetheless surprised to see it had been written.

A majority of 20% is enough for some things - a majority of more than 50% is not enough for other things.

By the way, you never told me what the picture meant. Are you ever going to?

Whatever. Plurality then.

The official poll for the icons was for whatever icon received the most votes. Whichever icon receives the most votes I will abide by.

What the icon uses and what the abbreviation is when typed out are two completely different things.

Fair enough. However, he was referring to the icon poll so I was talking about that.

Anyway, it's a beautiful sunny day so I'm going to go out and enjoy that.

Maybe I'll play some Rise from Erebus (Rife) later this evening. Fantastic modmod of FFH2. I highly recommend it to anyone. :)

Hey, I voted for the winner here. I think the CiV winning the other poll was more of a political move than a logical one. And that's too bad.

ooh lovely! a debate that requires little to no thought.
civ5 rolls off the keyboard in a nice way, each button is hit once, and the pattern delegates uses for both hands so niether gets tired.

ciV is more tricky, as one has to concurrently hit the SHIFT button with the 'v' key.
civ V is even worse, for you are repeating keys, and the aforementioned shift button.

I therefore submit to you, that civ5 is the 'best' and most efficient abbreviation.

:P :P :P

Yes, but the debate is not which is the "best" abbreviation. The debate is whether ciV as an abbreviation should be discouraged. I think that it should be discouraged, but no one has the power to stop it from being used.

C5. C5. C5. C5. C-FIVE!

All the fast paced explosive power you've come to love in C4, taken to the next level!
C5, get yours today!

Hate it!

C5 looks better and on this board it will work just fine. (Though, on an auto forum people might think you're talking about a previous generation of the Corvette.)

Seriously? A poll on whether or not we should be telling people what abbreviations to use?

As long as the content of anyone's posting is clear, I think we leave them alone when it comes to what abbreviations they use.

ciV or CiV (at the begining of a sentence) is not necessarily clear. I've already seen discussions where it became unclear as to whether Civ 5 or the entire Civ franchise was being discussed.
