I've seen that some people play one city challenge. Does that mean you build only one city? Does that mean you cannot conquer other civ's cities either? What is the best strategy to use? I've tried it once and fell hopelessly behind and in the end they conquered me without any problems...

one city challenge (OCC) is mostly played with landing victory in mind. Always make peace (allies when possible) and trade, trade, trade for the bonuses that you get to your science research. If played correctly, you'll be ahead in the space race, and have all the Wonders that increase trade/science. to start, it helps to find a good location for your city, so you can afford to spend a few turns before settling.

but I'll have to try better I guess. I've tried it in the GOTM89 ant there you don't get a very suitable startingposition and you cannot get of that island. I started to build a SSC and got the collosus, copernicus and newtons college, builded a library and a university, but wasn't able to get the seti. I transformed the land as good as possible. I builded not enough caravans I guess. Putted all my effort in getting the wonders. I'm relatively new to this game and have allready learned a lot since I've visited this site. before I did not know of SSC and stuff like that and always wondered how people were able to get to the space race. Now I'm playing a game where I might succeed in that for the first time :)

For most every Wonder, you will NOT build them. The secret is rushing them with caravans. That means build caravans (incremental rush buy the caravans) then have them move from, and then back to your city and choose to help build the wonder, instead of making a trade route.
How to do this exactly is this: set production to warrior, rush buy the warrior.
then (same turn) set production to phalanx, rush buy the phalanx.
then (same turn) set production to archer.....rush buy..... do this until you finish off with a caravan. All in one turn. Its cheaper to do this incrementally (10 sheilds at a time) . You could buy the 'van all at once, but you will end paying more. Then once you get enough vans (i think 4 for Marco polo's embassy, 6 for great wall) then you use those vans to rush your wonder.

I am not an OCC player, but, from reading the threads, it looks like you only want to build the wonders whose effect cannot be provided by a city improvement. Ie., its cheaper to build city walls instead of the Great Wall, likewise with a granery instead of the Pyramids. Do build Colossus, Copes, and Newton's, etc.

Awesome stuff here. Does anyone know of an OCC game in the sci-fi scenario... or does my memory serve me correctly and that you need to defeat the Nona guardians to win that by a space race?
