One thing that bugs me about China...

Why is its capital Beijing and not Kaifeng as it should be? Kaifeng was the Tang era capital of China, and seeing as Kyoto is the Japanese capital, instead of Tokyo, Karakorum the Mongolian capital instead of Ulan Bator, Thebes is the Egyptian capital instead of Cairo, its been bugging me for all the time that its modern capital is being used instead of the dynasty capital at Kaifeng.

Thankfully you can rename cities; so I can have my Kaifeng when I play but it makes you think why they did this?

I am no expert on China, but a quick wiki search makes me think Beijing is a good pick for the Chinese capital. It has had numerous names over time (Zhongdu, Dadu, Jingshi, Peking) which illustrates to me the cities importance for different peoples over time, was the world's most populous city from 1425 to 1650 and from 1710 to 1825 which is quite impressive, and has always been an important, if not the most important, city in China since the Mongolian conquests (it was the Northern Mongolian center of control over its Chinese holdings, and the capital for each successive Chinese dynasty thereafter). I understand your arguments for other civ capital names, but this one just fits right for me.

The japanese capital is correct the clan who control kyoto was the shogun

Dont know about china because there where a lot of dynasties in china but thinx beeing is the central point

Nope the Emperor (actual ruler) controlled Kyoto.

The Shogun was based in Edo (which became Tokyo later on, when it became the new capital - Tou(東) = East, Kyou(京) = capital ==> east capital, vs Kyouto 京都 = Capital City)

My Chinese girl tells me the capital in Wu Zetian's days was Xi'an...

I think it would make sense for each capital to be whatever city was the capital in the time the leader the game depicts was in charge. That, at least, would be consistent.

I agree to a certain extend... considering Wu Zetian is the chosen leader, and she's *kinda* Tang Dynasty, Beijing is not a good choice.

But there had been several capitals in China's long history, and Beijing is definitely one of the longest... so I'm fine with it.

I have a bigger problem that Hong Kong is not in China's cities list, esp since Macau is in.

Yeah, this is a horrible problem that can't be solved. Too bad there isn't a rename city button...oh wait, there is! ;)

Thankfully, one of the great things about Civ is renaming cities! Granted, you van't do that if the AI is China, but for that it shouldn't make much of a difference.

Plus, if you have that much of a historical qualm, American's capital should be New York or Philadelphia since that was the capital under George Washington, Athens shouldn't be the capital for Greece as they were city states, not a unified nation and Alexander was Macedonian, not Greek. Oh, and the Viking capital was not Copenhagen and the Russian Capital under Catherine was St. Petersburg, not Moscow.

This is not a historically accurate game nor does it try to be-Montezuma dropping the Atomic Bomb or the Mongols landing on the moon isn't remotely historical. This game gives you a semi-historical setting, with real people (or even borderline mythical) and let's you play to see who can stand the test of time.

seriously.... a name.... there are worse things that need to be fixed.

But very few of them are more easily resolved, and in such a quick time. How hard can it be to send the coffee boy to Wikipedia to see where Wu Zetian was based when she was a ruler?

Extremely undifficult.

Well if we followed this line then Winchester should be the capital of England.

Wow, I totally didn't know there was a rename city button. Combined with the ability to rename leader/civ/adjective, I will finally be able to RP more easily :)

Kaifeng was the Tang era capital of China

No, Chang'an was the capital of China during most of the Tang dynasty. Kaifeng was the capital of the Northern Song dynasty. But, yeah it is annoying that they do that with so many civ's capitals and cities: I'd personally like Pataliputra for India too.

edit: forgot to capitalize Song.

What bugs me about China is their unique ability but I suspect this is simply due to my poor knowledge of Chinese history. I would have thought, however, that China would be about invention and be science-orientated rather than be cast as warmongers.

1 Name: Sun Tzu ;).

Exactly, one name. And while Mr Tzu is obviously one of the absolute heavy-weighters in terms of influencing the world (namely military doctrine), does this really warrant China, a nation of such incredible size and influence, to be cast as warmongers?

Uh... I actually didn't know we could rename cities! Please don't tell me it's something painfully obbious like clicking on the name in the city screen...

Close. The button at the lower right of the city name-- think it says "edit," I'm not loading a game to double check.

You really want to open that can of worms?

Not at all! That was my point! I'm actually a history teacher, but I think people need to realize Civ has never attempted to be an absolutely accurate game. So compared to the other inaccuracies I listed, why should a city name that you can rename be so horrible?
