A few games back, I saw the AI had build a city on a one tile island. That is, there was a single land tile unconnected to any other land, and he put a city there. My question is, how would I ever take that city? I can't even attack it with anything other than air units, right?

Air units or coastal bombardment, maybe.

I did the same thing in one of my games - build a city on a one tile island to prevent an enemy from claiming the land. I won before I could see what happened to it though.

arnt their units later in the game that can attack from transport ships(i think in civ3 the stat was amphibious, i cant spell)

In Civ4 EVERY land unit can attack from transport, they simply suffer a severe penality to combat value.

There is a promotion experienced units can get which allows them to make amhibious attacks without penality.

In my opinion this IS an improvement over Civ3, where one tile cities could be attacked only in modern era by marines.
