Online game - 2 hours every other night

Happy BD Vind.
They have a smiley for every occasion :bday:

You know, if you'd bothered to make contact with us instead of fighting barbarians all the time, you might have gotten some presents.

As for the game, I'm going down. I wasn't surprised with that attack, civ_boy, I just didn't know how to cook up an answer for it. Those special Chinese units are a problem. I wonder what a better player would do? Maybe researching Feudalism ASAP was in order.

For the record, guys, in the words of Napoleon, "civ_boy is not to be trusted." Of course he didn't do anything to nourish trust in the first place... quite the opposite.

Vindicator summed it up nicely when he said: "China sucks" :)

Thanks for the b-day wish!

What the...? civ_boy is attacking you? Damn, that boy is one backstabbing SOB. :p

Maybe I'll try to make contact with you all so we can team up to put down civ_boy's uprising. Oh, wait...I can't, because I'M TOO BUSY DEALING WITH THE BARBS AND RUSSIA! It was bad enough being sandwiched between Russia and Inca, but did the barbs REALLY have to join in? Bastards, all of 'em.

Well it doesn't make it a moot point for those running it from Windows 98 :( .Net and pitboss are not compatible (certainly for my setup) so I cannot use the notifier.

However back to the issue - without knowing why the password and email appear intertwined however I am guessing that the file format may change - in which case all pitboss games will become invalid.

Backstabbing?

I never broke a peace treaty. :) In fact, I was quite passive. In my other MP games, there almost constant war, so this was peaceful by comparison.

ZLO, should have kept coming at me before I had my specials.

I feel I am quite trustworthy, and I good ally :) I never did something I said I wouldn't. I took LYONS, which is what I said I would do.

My initial thought was to "choke" white. From what I saw early, your land was awesome, and I had jack for resources etc. Then I had to worry about yellow, based on his score, so I could not go after you with the "choke". I decided to turtle and then sledge when I could.

It worked out. Yellow was not aggressive when he could have been. Where is your army Fur, and cities, I haven't seen many.

I agree that it doesn't look good for white. CATS are coming as well. And the second wave.

HAPPY BDAY VIN. Yes if I had contact I would give you something.

On that note, the Mrs and I are going out tonight. I hope to be back at 10:15 my time, so 15 minutes late.

Who knows, maybe I will run out of gas with the attack, as ZLO predicts.

Is the pitboss that good? I would think sessions to actually turn turns over is best.

later guys, sorry for the preceived "untrustworhtiness"

Who's white?

The only drawback with PB is it has to be simul. turns. If it wasn't, it would play just like a PBEM game. But with a 12-hour turn timer, you have plenty of time for the strategy side when all players are on at the same time.

I appreciate your telling us in advance. Still, as the (original) host I have to say it's really not cool. 15 mins times 3 people is, well, a lot. I'm not even sure if ZLO reads this forum, though he should. Please make an effort to be on time, or ASAP, and give my apologies to the civ_girl...

As for untrustworthiness, trust is something you have to build. Now, the real artists will build your trust, and then backstab you. It's all part of the game, and I would call that a GOOD game of civ. But you - you were aggressive from our first encounter, so I'd say there was no backstabbing, just the regular kind of warmongering.

I'm still puzzled as to why you attacked my worker at the start. Sure, you gained a worker, which is worth a little bit. But you lost any trust I could afford you right then and there, and forever. And I made sure everybody knew. Was it worth it?

Then you told us you had intended to give it back, just AFTER the lions ate it (lol! the irony!). Sheesh, giving it back would add exactly zero trustworthiness to your character. INTENT to give it back after it got eaten added even less.

Anyways, the end result is good for you, so well played all the same. Not sure what I'd do different if I'd played this a second time around. I'd be happy to hear your criticism (Hell, I deserve it after this rant.)

White = english = furious... As for defense against civ boy's attack, there's like 5-6 tiles of *jungle* with *rivers* between you and civ boy... Furious, you had axemen, archers and swordsmen... Strategically placed in those jungle you could grind civ_boy's aggression to a halt!

Ok, chinese crossbowmen attack stacks, so you could've put few solo units in those jungle. Pretty simple- if he attacks, he loses momentum, if he ignores those units he leaves his back open with those units threatening anything he will send after the first wave...

On top of that, it will take *forever* for his reinforcements to arrive to your cities...

Hey guys! you are starting a new game on a faster turn around? I am looking forward to it.

Not yet, but you can take over for Yvex, since he won't be able to play any longer due to his school's firewall. :( He'll PM you the password to his civ if he needs to bail.

Just to be clear, next game is Tuesday night.

Yes we need someone to replace Yvex. Someone that's willing to commit to 2 hours every other night, at set times, starting Tuesday. Yvex has a great empire, btw, it's number 1 on the scores.

If by any chance Yvex DOES show up, the replacement guy can take over the Incas, currently played by the AI.

Well this was a fun session. Yvex (ZLO) sure saved my butt - at least for the time being. And I didn't know you can get so much milage off of slavery and forests. Every city contributed a longbowman or two or three, and they're still cranking units out here and there. Of course I tore down the countryside, all my towns and ****. London is but a sad shadow of its past glory. Anyways thanks to all for the encouragement, it was an instructive session.

What the...? Is zlo at war with civ_boy, too?

Downsides to using Slavery to crank out units: Increased unhappiness (duh!) and a reduction in the Unit Cost discount (since it's tied to total city population). But in your case, you didn't have a choice. :)

Hopefully, they'll grow back quickly...until civ_boy takes them. :p

well, i don't think they fired shots but he's parading some guys along the border, reportedly.

No unhappiness, since the "it's too crowded" unhappiness is much smaller so the luxury resources are enough to offset it.

What's the Unit Cost discount and why is it reduced? I thought units are at a fixed universal price.

Yes thank you, she was NOT happy. "Why do we have to rush home for a 'stupid game'". I tried to make the effort for ZLO since it was his last session. Once I realized we had the event Sunday night, 6-9pm, I let you guys know. 15x3????? Would you rather I didnt hurry and wrote I was going to cancel, would have been EASY to do. or didn't show at all?

Yes I concur, no stabbing. I only took the worker alone and took down the weakened unit, since killing it was also easy. I don't know about real artists. In the games I have been in, everyone is on guard, there is NO TRUST.

I'm still puzzled as to why you attacked my worker at the start.

Punish mistakes. Every game I have seen, a worker unescorted is a freebie and an automatic take. In the early game you can't afford NOT to steal the worker. There are whole strategies on patrolling borders to pick such units off. Too bad he died, he would have been a hard worker :)

Sure, you gained a worker, which is worth a little bit. But you lost any trust I could afford you right then and there, and forever.

In CIV 4 MP, trust is never earned, ever. (remember the "artists") If you have a peace treaty that CAN NOT be broken, then you can relax, a little.

And I made sure everybody knew. Was it worth it?

Sure, you get to know the people you are playing. The only mistake you made was not uniting with ZLO and taking me out. Oh, and also letting my Great Merchant get 900 bucks. I would have killed that guy in an instant. But that's just me. It was rare to use a trade mission in a MP game.

Also, ZLO would tell me you were beggin him to attack me. To me, that behind the game play stuff IS MUCH worse then me picking off your mistake. Say to the group ATTACK CIV you girl ZLO". lol That's what I am used to.

Then you told us you had intended to give it back, just AFTER the lions ate it (lol! the irony!). Sheesh, giving it back would add exactly zero trustworthiness to your character.

It would have avoided THIS. based on your hissy fit, I started to think, oh he is not used to this kind of game. Perhaps I should say here ya go, take him back, but don't do it again. (slap on wrist) That thought occurred to me but then in like 3 minutes it died.

INTENT to give it back after it got eaten added even less.

huh? get the facts right man. See above.

Anyways, the end result is good for you, so well played all the same.

Not really, I lost heart when I could have ran you through. So after I decided not to take York, I pulled up. Nice move pillaging it. I might have pressed on and taken it for the Stone. Anyway, it's the rubber daggar trick.

Move up a stack. Sometimes you will get the guy to do what you did, take down his own empire tryign to defend it. I was able to pick off units in the field and not suffer many losses at all, and I can see 2 cities that are smaller than previous intel stated, so that's good. Your cap looks lower, and I think York WAS a 7 or something.

Not sure what I'd do different if I'd played this a second time around.

If you had to go back, I would think your start must have been slow. I was expecting TONS of units to come pouring down at me. The land from my first recon showed great resources and top-notch land. I was VERY scared. I founded 3 cities VERY quickly and then tried to grow. I had advantage in that you are not aggressive and I had the weak AI next to me in Nap. I had a nice buffer to protect from big yellow

I'd be happy to hear your criticism (Hell, I deserve it after this rant.)

The only thing that I will critize is the comment about wasting peoples time. I tried hard to make it home versus cancelling. I try to be a good citizen and respect other people all the time. I am sorry if you guys are mad about the delay.

Minor point is the whole worker thing. I was thinking of giving it back, and then that decision made itself. I should have walked it back, so I did the same thing you did, unescorted settles outside culture. BAD STEVE

Anyway, I hope this made sense. I would think you should play out your civ until the game ends. Hopefully ZLO will make it in, although he doubts it, and I beleive him.

PS Zlo come one bring it on man, 13 units on my border, what are they on a picnic?

PPS Nice longbow and walls

The number of units supported for free under the Unit Cost heading in the finance screen is proportional to your total population. The larger your cities, the more units you can have for free (no Unit Cost). It's an effective way to discourage rushing with a lot of units.

We're looking for someone to replace one of our players in our multi-session online game. Our man ZLO a.k.a. Yvex had to quit the game since he's moving to college, where the firewall is strong and non-CIV-friendly. You will be replacing ZLO from now and until the end of our multi-session game.

A little bit about ZLO's empire:

Egypt.
No. 1 in the global scores chart.
Borders with No. 2 which is China.

This nation isn't too shabby!

The replacement guy/girl should:
Have capability to play on Gamespy. (be sure you can do this!)
Be committed to playing TONIGHT Jan 17 at 23:00-01:00 EST
Be committed to playing two or more additional sessions, some other nights this week.

Make ZLO proud! And if you screw up, you can always blame ZLO...

If by the off chance that ZLO pierces his firewall and joins the game, you'll be playing as the Incas, a proud nation of AI origin.

First-come first serve.
