Online petition for an updated Civ III editor

What it looks like is they will allow us to become a company that they become the publishers to. Basically, become a mirror company of Firaxis where they can profit off of the games put out by us.

From my perspective, considering the money involved everyone would do better off trying to make a new company and its own game with the money.

In a nutshell they are being unreasonably greedy b**tards.

Well, keep in mind they are a business. And they are supposed to make money. I would likely do the same thing as they are doing. But at least we are talking to them. That is a lot further than we have gone in a long time.

With or without money, people are needed to help keep the petition alive with 2K. The more people who show interest and voice it, the more willing they will be to negotiate. :goodjob:

EDIT: If anyone thinks this is a good idea I can go to the Off Topic and maybe other Non-Civ4 forums and try to generate some interest in this thread or in the 2k forum thread. Perhaps there are Civ3ers out there who don't realize how far Steph and I Batman have managed to get with 2K, and who would like to join in.

I already P.M.ed Thunderfall yesterday about "sticky'ing" the thread I started in the General Discussions section. No response from him yet.

This is just to update anyone who comes in late in the thread on the latest responses Steph and I Batman have gotten from 2K.

If you haven't already, voice your support too!!

Latest answer received by Steph.

what you'll need to do before we can refer you to our lawyers and such is come up with your company and then write a detailed proposal of what you want to do. for example, you will want to license the Civ III code, which we have, and then modify it. you would never be able to release this code to the public, however, but you could, for example, sell the modified and compiled game.

but first, you'll need to create your company and draft us up a business proposal.

No offence, but you havn't got jack yet...

everything in this world is for sale.. why are you all so excited now?

sorry, your missing my point, establishing you could buy something, for a unknown price? I could have told you that!

However, badgering them until they will let you work for free for them.. mgiht get somewhere.

Why not get a group of programmers who are willing to work for free producing a new patch?

That's why we need to get all the support we can get. Steph knows programing. If you do as well, and want to seriously give it a go then thats another programmer. We can do this.

Everybody...slow down. When I posted the link I found for the 2K site, and when I created the thread on the 2K site, I had no idea what kind of response we would get from 2K. In reality, I was shocked we got any response at all. But we have now. This is miles ahead of the total lack of response when I mailed 2K last year.

It has been made clear that 2K will ONLY speak to a corporation. And a business plan will have to be presented. Steph and I have both been told that. Steph and I have been communicating with each other. Where this will go from here is still to be sorted out, and Steph and I are discussing.

But one thing is abundantly clear. This will take time and some amount of money. And it is clear now that pushing 2K to release the source code is a waste of time. That is not to say a patch will not be created (it might), but this will have to come through a sound business decision.

Don't get me wrong. This project may still die on the vine.

Creating a corporation, then researching, drafting and presenting a viable business plan are hardly trivial matters. Then there has to be negotiation with 2K. THEN the actual coding could take place. Any one of the steps along the way could kill this project in a heartbeat.

BUT, we have managed to open dialogue with the holder of the code. So by all means continue to post your support for the project on the 2K site.
But don't irritate them off by demanding they open source the code, or suggesting they release it to a loose-knit group of coders. Not going to happen that way.

Step 1: Obtain by fair means or foul sufficient money to fund the corporation or company (there is a big difference between them) I suggest proposing to the CFC members to pay a certain amount of money for the greater good. Everybody pitch in, and we might be able to collect sufficient capital to finance this.

Step 2: We need a mission statement (i,e a short sentence that explains what your company does. It should be able to be told to somebody in an elevator ride).

Step 3: Create the company or corporation.

Step 4: Negotiate with 2K and strike a reasonable deal with them. Maybe they get like 90% of the profits and we get 10% (to be split between the contributors according to donation size).

Step 5: Shipping. We have to get the package as light as possible, so maybe we could just sell the CD and a paper saying where to brush up on the latest changes (www.civfanatics.com). This will eat up our money like nothing else will. We need to try to get some help from 2K for this stage.

Step 6: Profits. We have to profit a lot from this. Maybe 200-500% RoI (Return on Investment) for 2K to take it.

Step 7: Enjoy!

In short we need to give 2K a pitch that says : "We're going to make a million dollars." No technicals, just the facts. KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid). We might have to go into a partnership with some other company. Somebody who is fluent in business terms should be on our side (I'm not suggesting myself, because I know that I can't do ALL this). Just because we never have started a company doesn't mean we never will. Start small, think big as I like to say.

"Together we stand, united we fall."

WE CAN DO THIS!

Ummm...I appreciate the exuberance, but I DO have some business background. I have a degree in Economics, a 1 year diploma in Business Administration, a 2nd degree in Physics, 6 years of sales experience, and another 9 years working at IBM on big dollar projects.

And the last thing you do is say "we will make a million dollars" with no technical info, and without projections based on hard research. You don't "Keep it Simple". You give them as detailed a plan as you can. This is by far the hardest part of the project. Changing the code is child's play compared to the business plan and negotiations, and finally, legal documentation.

Let's just slow down. We have gone years without any hope of the code being altered. We can go a few more days or weeks before we jump into this headfirst.

I didn't mean absolutely no technicals, but you still have to seem confident. When you're pitching your project, try not to overwhelm the target with info.

Do you remember Global Village and Big Island? If so, then you should know that both of those companies got funded thanks to this technique by a close acquaintance of mine. Even if the 2nd didn't succeed, the fact that it got funded shows that this guy knows what he was doing.

Check your PMs I_Batman. I just jumped in. You can take all the time you want. I'm in no hurry. Just giving you my commitmemt. I think Dominatrix is basically saying much the same thing. We must start somewhere and gathering support comes before step 1.

I'm in.

Exactly.

I also think to further our quest we should ask the moderators to create a group for this thing. That would get our legitimacy up, and many more people would hear about us.

Great idea!!! It will probably require a few petitions to the moderators. I'll send one tonight.

The purpose of the group would basically be to give us a place to stick out like a sore thumb.

Time for action not foot dragging! We have plenty of time to fail, let's not hasten the process!
