Iin my 20 K game, Gil, sent a whole batch of his shiny new cavs into my land and set up a couple of city grabs. But, he had to move on one turn to attack the next so I brought in all my bits and bobs of cav, and cannon. I got set up and then issued the move or declare notice. I was a bit distracted thinking about other units I might be able to call in (rails are building) and thought that he was just jiving me. I failed to notice that he did indeed leave so I declared on him.

I know ...:wallbash::wallbash::wallbash:

I have taken three cities. I plan on a couple more before trying to chat. Gil was way past due for a good drubbing and maybe he has learned his lesson. He doesn't seem to have anything left to send at me. His 10 cavs were pretty much it I think.

I am not in big difficulty or anything but it just goes to show that you need to be paying attention. When I get back to the game, I'll see what treasures he has in that one galley he sent out.

Just wanted to share and wondered if others have hit similar situations? Paying attention is definitely the best way to go.

One time late in a game, I finished a massively long turn, moving units, attacking (I was at war with one civ, and every civ on the map was at war with at least one other civ), managing production, workers, etc. Probably took a good twenty minutes. At the end of the turn, I struck a peace deal with my enemy, taking them for lots of stuff (of course). Satisfied, I hit <spacebar>, got up and left the computer to do whatever while I grabbed a snack or did some dishes, whatever. They wouldn't do anything that would/could affect me, so why would I care what happens on their turns, right?

Wrong. When I came back, I think my first words were... "What the h-- happened?!" Several of my cities had been nuked, many AI cities had been nuked, all the nations except the one I was allied with had declared war on me, and there were assorted units swarming all over my new overseas possesions as well as from my Bab neighbors. I have no clue why, and damned if I'm going to reload and do the last turn and do it all again just to have what happened maybe happen again. To this day I don't know what happened, but I can only guess that my ally had sent some nukes flying, leaving me "guilty by association." I just did what was natural... nuke all the f*kers back and take over everything in sight :p Just goes to show you, you stop paying attention for one minute and BAM! Global thermonuclear war. Take heed, kids!

oops... sorry. My bad :lol:

Indeed. Reality sucks. (sorry, btw)

OOH I just remembered another moment of inattention that cost me dearly...

Playing a good rowdy game of civ, and on a long IBT went downstairs to prepare a couple of hotdogs for dinner. Just got everything on the plate, condiments applied, and decided to run back upstairs and check on things. Made a few build orders, adjusted some units, hit <spacebar>, went back downstairs for the IBT. To my dismay, the hotdogs were gone, and Diesel, my roommate's boxer, had a tell-tale splotch of mustard on his nose and a very, very guilty puppy-dog face. Bad dog. Very, very bad dog. :nono:

Or is that crossing the "reality" threshold again?

I disappear for a few hours, and my post, and apparently four others, are gone. There's a classic example of taking your eye off the ball.

I dunno how many workers I've lost due to wandering barbarians.

I usually have the opposite problem once I start playing. I almost set the house of fire when I put some bread in the oven and started playing Civ3 while it was cooking. I was alerted when the smoke detector went off, went downstairs and all that was left of the bread was a blackened lump. It took ages to get the smell of smoke out of the house.

There was however the time in the Civ 3 demogame when I left the whole fleet including the transports with our invading army behind in port while only moving one destroyer by mistake...

Inattention has had me have my undefended capital razed by an enemy spear landed nearby. I forgot to kill the little SOB before hitting the enter button. Talk about a red face.....

If I do something like that, say accidentally moving a worker left when I want to move him right, I'll usually reload. Depends on how late in the game it is, and how long the turn's been going though.
