I just downloaded some things that are contained in BTS Configuration Files. Does anyone know how to open them?

Whenever I open one with notepad I get something like this.

ú\ëYÖT.s. .{¯h}½ï‡ï¸~œP˜ˆ˜£>LLLÉü´XN»ýÄÄDÏ^u<qO Ï7ç¢

How do access the normal xml and graphics files from them?

What files exactly are you trying to access? Because I have no clue what you're trying to do.

Give a filename or something, so we actually know what you're trying to do.

Cheers, LT.

Im trying to add the units/buildings to a mod so I need the DDS and NIF graphics most of all. As for XML I guess ArtDefines, but thats of less priorty and I could make them myself If I had too.

Judging by what youve said in these two posts, I think you tried to open up the dds or nif file with note pad. I only know this cuz I inadvertantly hit "open with notepad++" instead of "open with Gimp" with a dds, and it showed those same symbols.

You need GiMP or an equivelent paint program to open the dds. Use sceneviewer or nifskope to view the nifs. And notepad for the XML. But really if you are only adding units from the DB then you only need to edit the xml files.

I downloaded GIMP but when I tried opening the BTS config it said it was an unknown file type and wouldn't open it.

Same with NifSkope but it wont even show a BTS config on its selection of usable files.

Perhaps you didnt understand what I wrote. It seems that you are a little mixed up. Before I think you were trying to open graphics files with notepad, now it seems that you are trying to open a text file with a graphics program.:crazyeye:

Gimp is for opening dds files, nifskope is for opening nifs. I only mentioned those because you said you needed something for dds and nifs. For xml files you just need notepad, notepad++, or anyother text editor will do.

By BtS config, I assume you mean the CivIVConfig.ini file (icon looks like a sheet of paper with a gear on it). The config file as well as the xml files are text so it stands to reason that you should open those with a text editor, like notepad.

Ooooohh. I think we are talking about different programs. The BTS Config Im talking about has the shield and crossed swords on with CIV written across it. What I am trying to do is get the graphics files out of it so I can use them individually.

If you still dont know what kind of file it is then go to this site.

http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=9789

Its a colection of buttons you can download so it should just be graphics and nothing else. When you try to download it will want to save it as a BTS Configuration file. This is just to give you an idea of what it is but Ive also found whole mods that use them as well.

Well dang! I only get the stupid BTS. Do you think there is some other program that I dont have that automactically makes the change when you select download?

Im not even totally sure what youre talking about really. The art files or any files really, that you down load here have nothing to do with the game until you put them into it your self. Theres no configuring it to BtS or anything.

So let me get this straight. What exactly happens when you hit download in that link you provided?

From the start of this thread it seemed like you already had the files. But now it seems like your having problems downloading them.

The download box comes up.

Do youwant to open or save this file?

Name:revisedbuttons 23.rar

Type:BTS Configuration File, 323KB

From:forums.civfanatics.com

Open Save Cancel

I hit save and it asks me where I want to put it but still will only save it as the BTS.

You need to extract it. It's a .rar file, .rar, .zip, and .7z files mean that the data has been compressed. This is downloading 101, most things you download from the internet will be in these formats, and you must extract the file to use the data. People compress data they send over the internet in order to reduce the size of the download/upload.

Well thanks.:goodjob::goodjob:

This has happened with all my questions so far. They seem simple, take dozens of posts to figure out ony to find that they were simple!

Thanks again and let us all hope I dont have another question for a long time.;)

I was pretty sure this was your problem. But I saw no point in responding because I could have been wrong until you answered this post:

Also don't feel bad if you don't know things like this, if you're new to using computers it's perfectly normal to not know about compressing and extracting files that you download. And now you know, so in the future you know what to expect when you download things. Also not all things you download from the internet will be in a standard data compression format (.zip, .rar, .7z), alot of files are compressed into an executable that self extracts when you run the extension. An example would be the patches for Civ4 (and virtually every computer game for that matter). So make sure the file you download isn't an .exe before you try to extract it.

But yeah, if in the second post (and the first reply with any specific information) someone asks you a specific question, (Like when Lord Tirian asked you what file type it was, and what you had downloaded) if you answer them you're likely to get a quicker response. :old:
