Other games played in "pitboss" style?

Hey

I guess pitboss is a term created for civ's special way of playing multiplayer games, I wonder what is the common term for this kind of gameplay and more importantly:

Would you recommend me other strategy games which could be played like this?
4x games are prefered, it's ipmortant to be stable and supported.. and fun

What i'm looking for are games where the players can take their turns in any order within a timeframe so it makes the games more dynamic compared to PBEM games.

Sadly pitbos is very unique to Civ 4. I know of nothing else like it.

Nearly all Play-By-Mail games basically do that, and from that play-by-email games. There aren't many commercial games that follow that format though. I'd have to go back to the 1990s or freeware games to think of one that does
