In 1.03, no great general points are awarded for melee combat with barbarians. Only ranged attacks gain points. Units themselves do gain experience correctly.

CivUP .23 is intended to remove "Great" from "great person" counter at top of screen, which is still there as in "Great General".

I don't think mods can fix the first problem.

Thanks for reporting the second problem; I've fixed it for v24. I show specialist names for great people on the top bar (Artist, Merchant, etc). There is however no "General" text key in the game, so I added one to solve that issue.

What causes that one? Combat detection? I had thought it worked differently pre gk?

I don't know how it works, because most of the combat stuff is in the game core only Firaxis has access to.
