Other turn based strategy games

Endless Legend,
Endless Space 2

The varieties of gameplay gimmics and unique traits of each factions on those games are just astounding.

Endless Legend still has new DLCs coming out even though they already have Endless Space 2 (with its excellent DLCs)

Endless Legend is probably the inspiration on why Civ VI has districts. You'll know if you play the game.

Heroes of Might and Magic 3 - Shadow of Death and Disciples 2. Why are these 2 games ignored on every best TBS games or best games overall lists makes less sense than flat earthers being able to breathe and walk at the same time.

Not any more, though. “Symbiosis” is supposed to be the last DLC for this game.

I didn't know that, thanks for info. I bought every DLC for that game, but hardly playing it. The lats time I played probably when inferno was out, trying the new volcano worshipping faction. I think the DLC was still buggy so I stopped playing EL, and ended up playing ES2 with the Hishoo expansion.

But man, since R&F and now GS, I got hooked on Civ VI. And now with the Civ V look-alike graphics too. Well done, Firaxis!

'Imperialism' and 'Imperialism II' from two decades ago, now both available on GOG. The first one is set in mostly in XIX century and spills a bit into early XX, the second one - in times of great discoveries and colonization.
Both are simple, but majestic, atmospheric and engrossing, definitely from the "one more turn category".
They can be viewed somewhat like turn-based early predecessors of later Paradox games.
I wish some studio picked up and resurrected the title. I wonder who owns the rights? Wiki says the developer 'Frog City' was acquired by Take-Two interactive but closed down, the publisher SSI eventually went to Ubisoft and the name was discontinued.

I've got to pick up Stellaris. I keep seeing it mentioned in several different threads. Sounds cool. Got it on my wishlist. Just waiting for a sale now.

I just bought it this weekend (mainly because of this thread).
I have been banging my head in frustration so far, so I know once I give it a few dozen more hours it must be great. :wallbash::love:
The amount of information available is staggering.....

I tend to play my games as strategy, but I am in a whole different world outside of CiV...
Fifa19 - Am I the only one who loves sports? I love the strategy of building up a program and the one type of game where I like the real time action. Soccer goals are so pretty!

Cities: Skyline - I build a city about once a year from scratch. Lots of strategy and lots of design.
I like sports, and I play OOTP Baseball quite a lot. It's an amazing game, although very different from Civ. I also enjoy Cities Skylines and used to play it almost addictively, but then it sort of began feeling repetitive.

Heroes of Might and Magic III, and Heroes of Might and Magic IV. Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic (basically a stand-alone Age of Wonders III expansion). Xcom (not played Xcom 2 yet).

I defenitly support Heroes of Might and Magic III or IV (I actually loved HMM IV despite all the community hate). But stay away from any iteration after the fourth in the series! Such a massive fudge up of a legendary game series has never been witnessed before!

Battle for Wesnoth is a hidden gem as well. It's very simple in it's built but has surprisingly tons of gameplay value due to a very active community.

I got Crusader Kings II but honestly can't get into it. There's no real ending to a game so it's a bit unmotivating to keep playing the game, in my opinion. However if you are a Paradox fan you should probably check it out but if you are, you probably already did.

On a side note, although not turnbased but rather singleplayer casual building game I can recommend Two Point Hospital, which is a reboot of the old Theme Hospital.

Yeah generally just real board games with friends are actaully the best ones... Arkham Horror board game, Pandemic and of course Settlers of Catan just to mention a few.

Even if you have to play board games solo (I do), the AI is still better than that of Civ VI...

Never got into the HoMM community but 3 was always my favorite and I sunk a decent amount of time into 4 but just had to drop the series after that. Bought 5 but couldn't get into it at all. Always mean to revisit it but just can't. It's simply not as good. Glad to hear it's not just me.

That's always the toughest part of strategy games, learning the mechanics and how to separate them from the bells and whistles. I know eventually I'll like a game once I learn it but there's some less fun hours spent learning before I get there.

You could put a snail in charge of the combat AI of your "solo" opponent and it will still be better than civ 6's...

I'll add another vote for Endless Legend. I haven't played the last few DLCs because my computer doesn't handle the game very well anymore, but I had a blast playing when the game was newer!

If you are a fan of the NFL, and don't mind text based Sims, I highly recommend Front Office Football. It's by far the most accurate American Football Sports Sim around. And I guess it's technically a Turn Based Strategy game, now that I think about it!

I agree with Cities Skylines. There are quite a few other tycoon/sim style games that I enjoy as well but aren't technically turn based, so I didn't bring them up.

HOMM 3 is one of the all-time greatest TBS and with HD mod for some UI stuff is still engaging today.

Another series that doesn't get the love it deserves is Warlords. Warlords 2 and 3 were some of the best TBS games of the 1990's, absolutely smashing that era's civ games in quality and competitive with HOMM. I would probably give HOMM 3 a small edge over Warlords 3.

I have yet to find much attractive after earlier EU 4 patches/Civ 4, though having been recommended Dominions 5 recently and seeing it in U_Sun's list does get my attention a bit.

Master of orion 2 is still one of the best 4x games out there. I didn't hate the recent remake but it didn't have half as much depth as I had hoped.

I heard an imperator: rome and that game is currently what's eating my time though I am tempted to say wait until the first big patch scheduled for june - there are still some bugs.
