Other ways to speed up Wonders?

I have been off and on playing CIVIII for over the last year and have come against a road block in building wonders faster the other Civs. I go after leaders but it takes a lot of battles to get that one leader then you have to go back to the city producing the wonder. It always seems that I'm one step behind the AI's. Any suggestions?

Thanks:rolleyes:

No. When building wonders you can't do any type of rush-building, not paying for them, not clearing forests nor disbanding units to my knowledge. Even if you rush something and then try to switch, wonder production becomes impossible and you have to start from scratch. It would be too easy to just go buying everything like in Civ2.

I wish there were some ways to rush wonders. Not so it's as easy as Civ2 was, but I don't fight well enough to get leaders often. What I did before I got PtW (don't know if I can still do it, though) was to start building a palace in the city I wanted the wonder in (or another wonder that was available before the target wonder I was planning on building) then when I get tech for the wonder I wanted, switch. Not always effective, but my only strategy.

you could prebuild a palace then switch to the wonder once you learn the tech to build it, of course dont accidently build the palace...
or you could do what playa said... I mean becka.

As warmongering does not guarantee leaders, prebuilding is actually a very effective (if not the most effective) way for players who prefer peace to reach a wonder if well planned ahead. :)

@Becka, yeah, you can still prebuild with PTW.

yup thats what I do in the early age....as soon as I set up my 3rd city I have a palace in the third one...by the time im at the piramids Im almost done with the palace and its a sinch....geez we should have a spoiler alert on this board cause stuff like this really drains the life outa the game

How so?

On higher difficulties, it's almost impossible to get wonders early in the game without starting a prebuild or getting a leader.

Also... I've found that pre-building is almost useless... In my games I prefer to take the terrority I want and then just mass up infasctructre. By the end of the industrial ages most of my core cities can build a palace in 3 turns... Which is not much of a pre-build.

Thanks everyone,

Strider could you explain what you mean by taking terrorities? I assume you go after the best land around. Doesn't this take time?

I don't find it useless at the start. The usefulness of prebuilding the palace does drop later on, so I just use something else as a prebuild.

Well... when your cities are producing about 50+ shields each turn each... You have to do MAJOR planning inorder to pre-build anything... Which takes to long and ruins the fun of the game (I once had a capital that produced 114 shields per turn)

As you build/conquer more cities, the cost of the palace increases. But say you have a city in the Industrial Age producing 100 shields per turn and you are racing the AI to build the Hoover Dam, which costs 1000 shields if I recall correctly. Even if your palace prebuild only will hold 400 shields, you can save yourself 4 turns out of the 10 that it would take to build the wonder from scratch. If you are going to try to tell me that a 40% advantage won't help you, then I am going to tell you that you are insane. Prebuilding is one of the most powerful tools that the human player has over the AI. I often prebuild with Colosseums for Universities and Factories. It beats building an extra unit or two while waiting around for the necessary technology.

You can build workers in other cities and join them to the wonder city until it's at max size. Like others have mentioned prebuilding helps a lot too. Make sure you have no specialists in the wonder city by keeping the lux slider up high enough. Make sure all tiles the wonder city is working have been improved, preferably with max shields and 0 growth. Other than that it boils down to luck.

You could go the DyP route, and create a unit that's sole purpose is to rush wonders/improvements. They call it a Merchant, costs something like 700 or 1400 shields, and isn't available til the end of the second/middle of the third era, somewhere in there.
