To make a new point ontop of the hundred posts about civil wars, succession, etc.

If a country is so engulfed in turmoil(a combo of 2+ of the following : starvation, civil wars, wars with third parties, natural disasters, war weariness, riots, national debt, etc) the concept of having cities revolt could be expanded.

Being ousted from power.

With rampant unrest and unhappiness, you could be overthrown, and mob rule would take control in your empire. (Anarchy would become the new government)

Your capital city's military forces, workers, settlers, leaders, etc would be expelled to the outskirts of your former captial, which would now be controlled by mob units and some of your former units(traitors). Your Civ would bascially be reduced be a travelling group of fighters and civilians, and a new special Leader, which would represent you.

If any of your cities managed to have a very low unhappiness rate during the turmoil they would remain loyal to you. You would need to move your forces into those cities (or if there are no cities, into mountains/forests for some protection against the new mob forces) and you would wage guerrila warfare until you liberate your empire once again. Some cities you reclaim would have massive happiness, because after a few turns of Anarchy and mobs ruling the streets, they would welcome you back as a liberator. From these cities you would reestablish your government type, and the cities could help you churn out more fighting units, etc to finish reclaiming your empire.

It would add a whole new factor into the game, one which I think would be very interesting and dynamic.

Any ideas?

Sorry, I don't like it. It might make an interesting scenario, but I wouldn't want to play every game with the threat of this happening.

You're right. It'd be best left to scenarios, or else maybe a very very very low percentage point change of it occuring, only with many prereq. factors, like I mentioned. The possibility of it happening would be interesting in and of itself, I think

See, that's what I like behind the concept of Conquests. You have specific scenarios where certain things need to be accomplished. While I don't like this idea as a standard game possiblity, it would make an interesting scenario. Just like you don't have sacrifice in every conquest game, or capture the princess....

The more I think about it, the more I'd like to see this as a scenario.
