I just had a game, or rather I was about to start a game, and before the game actually started I got the defeat screen! Defeated in turn 0! I presume my settler must have been defeated.

Has anyone else had this? I wonder how common it is...

Do me a favour and verify your game cache.

There's no way a game should set up and cause imediate fail. There's undoubtely something wrong with your game. Just check if it's allright. Verify Your Game Cache .. or something like that via Steam.

Doesn't have to be a "real" bug. AFAIK it's possible that on too small maps with too many players not all civs can be placed and that settlers are auto destroyed.
I think we have also a bug report about it.

Was on a small map (duel) but with only 2 civs and 4 CS, so not excessive.

I didn't have a game fail... if I did, I'd say and do it... I believe I've been taken out on turn 0 (in the same way that someone reported winning on turn 0)...

Btw, I am into another game since with no problems...

Hm... I'm gonna see, I have a hunch.

Nope, it is not because the map was a Ring (which is a very weird script, it doesn't generate properly in World Builder and only permits max of 5 CS, making the other conquered

Which civ did you random? Maybe the game decided to drop a civ that is supposed to start in a certain area, if that kind of area is not present on a map (and the game can't make sure the small map has that area as it makes the map before randoming the civ). Just an idea...

LOL ; I've gotten messages about city states being destroyed on turn 1 before; but this is the first time I heard about a major civ losing on turn 1.

Um, just consider it a rolled a faulty map and you need to start a new game.

I've had it before, can't remember any of the specifics, but its definitely happened to me before.

Don't know, it went straight to the Defeat Screen! I didn't see the map at all! (it may have flashed up, but with a good graphics card, seeing something up for a nanosecond is pretty impossible!

lower the difficulty
no way! anything less is too easy!

@joncnunn
that is exactly how I treated it...

I've had this happen before. I started a game, can't remember the options and such but it was fairly standard I remember. The game loads and I instant lose, and all I can see is some arctic. After checking the replay, however, I can see the game generated a viable map, and everything should have worked, I wasn't even positioned anywhere near the arctic.

I've seen city states get wiped out on turn one, and had games where only 3-4 city states spawned when there should have been 12 or more, as well. Sometimes weird stuff happens I guess.

I've had it regularly, on common maps. The intro is done, the game zooms to the landscape, but it's all clouds - or maybe arctic, I don't remember - and then this defeat message comes.

I think it's a placement problem and nothing to do with corrupted game files or anything.
I've never worried much about it, the next start will be fine.
