P3-02 - Hostile Takeover Inc.

Indeed, will attach it as soon as I get home

I can play Saturday... if someone grabs before then go ahead

I would wager free merchant from economics is out of the bag so I would go astronomy... we really should go caste to try and push out a merchant and an artist for the variant, run an engineer with the gp at all times in order to get lucky, remember the variant!!!!

I really really really wanna kill Roosevelt... but looks like getting oxford up is a bigger priority... so I will bide my time for now

Haven't looked at the save yet, will come up with some sort of diplo plan, but FR and FM seem like good ideas... are we building the Taj? if so GA will be a good time to switch.

Taj is under construction, but I fear we may lose it. Something like 16 turns left without marble, working all the high-production tiles. Others haven't had nat for long, but Darius is one who does and he has marble.

I'm guessing the free GM went to Darius, as a couple popped during my set and he had edu & banking when I met him.

I feel that, playing by the variant, we are Ok to start warring after we have founded a corporation, at which point I'd vote for wiping out the Americans.

In the meantime we should consider a fake war against Toku as both Louis and WvO are fighting him, nobody likes poor Toku, and he is in a major tech hole. If asked definitely join in.

On the home front workers don't have too much to do anymore, but should probably put in some more watermills in New Riverside and construct a road along our frontier with FDR.

And here is the save!

Economics is surely gone, so Astronomy next sounds good. We can trade Banking from Darius and hopefully also Economics so we can revolt to Free Market. I don't see any problem getting GM and GA, but Ironworks engineer specialists seem to be the best way for our GE.

I think we should still invest EP's on Roosevelt, seeing that he has already stolen a tech from us and looking at the spy stumbles we're seeing from him. Who knows, maybe we can still steal something valuable from him?

Swap tiles, move workers yada yada yada.

After much debating decide that if next GP is a scientist will use for a golden age(will bulb Printing Press not Astronomy) due to speeding up Taj/oxford...

So after a good few minutes of consideration a GE pops

Send him to sleep for mining Inc.

Unfortunately Darius builds Taj... We get some failure money

Louis requested war on Toku, I accept given only person who likes him is Darius and by the end of the set Darius was down to cautious...

With Taj out of the picture I do a civic swap... caste to push out GM and GA as well as boost workshops, FS because Bureau is restricted, we will probably wanna go Nationhood at some point, but we are still in teching phase, and FR for diplo

Mansa wants lib... I think and say yes, we are in FR now and need to make friends, and Mansa is a great friend, giving in puts him to pleased

Louis wants to cancel deals with Roosey, I tell him to go away

Trade with Willem for Banking, fair trade boosts, + Fr is his favorite civic...

End set with Astronomy in, did not trade it around, we may want to consider doing so, or wait a bit more before, IDK

Resources atm

Tech, traded for Banking on last turn, research set on PP no beakers invested, economics will be available next turn, Economics and Constitution required for corporation... so if we want that next we can drop research to 0 for a turn, grab it for trade routes + set up Wall Street

Universities set to complete on same turn, we need 2 more theatres for globe, I think Volcanic office will be the place to put globe because... well decent food and by volcanoes and I would rather lose farms than towns to volcanoes.

I think we should try and push out a Merchant from Group HQ next then an Artist

Churn galleons out of HE city, get up Theatres and Banks

Other than corporation IDK what we should do next techwise, biology-medicine is a good path as biology will help us grow... RP is attractive because we will need to windmill a lot, RR for mining inc... so much to do

Have to take a closer look at the save later, but looks like we're doing quite fine :)

But:

So after a good few minutes of consideration a GE pops

Send him to sleep for mining Inc.

OK Got it... Glad we have the Engineer in the bag as it was the one part of variant that was loooking Tricky..

It looks like we have OB with most other leaders, but if not we should sign them to take full advantage of the astrono-monopoly.

Long-term things look good. Mansa will be teching quickly with lots of good land and a happy neighbor. I think that he will be a primary threat end-game, but one that we can wait to deal with later. We don't really need to worry too much about keeping Darius happy--it looks like he got blocked off by Toku pretty early on and, while he has been teching quickly, will likely peter out soon with only 3 cities. I think he may be a good place for a beachhead on the main continent. If Willem grabs much more land from Toku he could also be a long-term space race threat, but we should be able to keep good relations with him as well as Mansa.

The next few sets should focus on getting an initial corp founded and then possibly gearing up for a war with FDR. However, let us not forget our variant! We are supposed to found and spread at least 3 corporations (which I interpret to mean actually use 3+ in most cities, as the idea behind the variant is to work with the power of corp's). Not that we can't found Mining and put it in a couple main production cities, but mining competes with too many other corp's for there to be 3 in any town with mining.

Here's a chart that Conroe created for PH11-Hypermegaglobalnet:

Obviously his notes on where to found and spread may not apply in our games, but it is a handy reference. Basically, in our situation it seems to me that having Sushi, Creative Constr., and Civ. Jewelers (possibly throwing in Aluminum Co. for kicks) would be the best. Plus whenever I've played a corp-focused late game I always have just done mining/sushi, which is boring! :D

In any case I think we should head for Sushi first, spread it to all of our cities, and then hit Roosy.

Not sure why we need windmills. The food from sushi should let us work all of our mines and pave over farms for cottages/workshops.

What's the difference between Creative constr. and Mining inc? To me they both seem equally boring, but Mining Inc. is just better :D

Is it Mining Inc. and Civilized jewelers that compete with each other while Creative constr. and jewelers go along fine? And Sid's Sushi can go with both ones?

You answer your own question perfectly Meiz :)

You can choose ONE of the corps' that all compete for rice:
Sid's Sushi
Cereal Mills
Standard Ethanol

AND EITHER Mining Inc. OR all the other corp's (Civ Jewelers, Aluminium Co., Creative Constr.).

As in the above chart, Mining competes with CivJewelers (gold & silver), Aluminium Co (coal), and Creative Constr (iron & copper). So out of the 7 total corps, the most you can have in one city is 4, three of which MUST be CreativeConstr, CivJewelers, and AluminiumCo, with the 4th as your choice of one of the rice-competing ones.

The big difference between Mining vs. CreativeConstr (besides Mining being better) is, as you say, that CreativeConstr can co-exist with any other corp besides Mining.

Based on the amount of seafood available, I see no debate about sushi vs. cereal. With the requirement to found & spread 3+ corp's, we can't really use only mining, as it competes with too many others.

Thanks for clearing that one, Pindrus. I'd definitely follow your suggestion for our corporations.

Nice chart you got there, Pindrus.

We should not forget to switch to running merchants everywhere to get the GM for Sid's. I think from here the best plan is to go directly for Corp (and change to Free Market in the meantime, of course), have Wall Street built in our commerce capital, then head for Railroad, get Mining Inc. up, and wipe Roosevelt off the map.

Proposed tech path:
Trade for Economics/Constitution -> Corporation -> (trade for PP somewhere along the way) -> RP -> Gunpowder -> Chemistry -> Steel -> Steam Power -> Railroad (and perhaps take Rifling along the way as well). Not important yet are Democracy/Scientific Method - we can of course trade for them, but we should beware about giving dangerous techs away.

3. The free market will be supported by its corporations. (Found at least 3 corporations, and spread them throughout the empire.)

If we found mining and spread it around our cities, we will only be able to really use 2 corps...

I'm fine if that's what we decide to do but it does go against our variant.

I'm fine if that's what we decide to do but it does go against our variant.

I'm okay with it as well... I should have realized that Mining does not go well with other corps, and the particular victory condition we are striving for makes any corp competing with Mining suboptimal.

I don't get it. Why not just go with Sushi + Creative constr. + Civilized jewelers - combo without any need to break our variants?

Mining is earlier and gives a lot more hammers?

I think it's still true to the spirit of our challenge here, we've been good and waited to found corp's before warring.

Well a relatively quiet set of Builder / Trading turns pushing us towards being able to found our Corporations (and unleash some war...)

1410 Ad Pick up Economics in a trade

And as everybody goes all peaceful on us settle the war with Toku as no more MMS bonus was accruing

1430 Mine Ops starts on a bank to help unlock Wall Street

With the Astronomy monopoly broken we take the chance to cash it in picking up Gunpowder

and Constitution (sorry no screenie) from Roosie.

1470 with Oxford un locked we start building it in our capital. Other than that we have been concentrating on Infra builds whilst churning out a couple of Galleons.

So on finishing Printing Press and Corporations with Self research its time to pass over. Scitnific Method selected but we may wish to switch to chemistry first to keep the GL a few turns longer as its on the Sid Sushi path.

Roosie is in WHEOOHRN mode

Tech position (Mansa is teching madly and trading as usual

Demographically we are Ok but could do with some hostile takeovers being imposed..

We have a decent chance of picking up a GM from next gp pop

And even got a nice Random Event

Ralph
