how exactly does the extra gold? how many units do you need to have for it to be better than despotism? what is the formula?

If I understood you correctly..

When ruling with pacifism you LOOSE gold when having military. I don't remember the exact costs but was it something like 1 gold/unit?

So if you just are into making gold, you don't want any army when switching to pacisfism. But that would leave you open for a attack.

Benefit from pacifism is 100% boost to GREAT PERSON points in every city where you have state religion. If you don't have religion, don't switch this on.

well saying you have a small army there is a level discount for units which helps towards pacifism units too. Pacifism is no upkeep while others cost some gold. At what point do units start to cost gold at different difficulties / speeds / mapsizes etc?

The financial advisor will tell you that. Hover over unit maintence and it should say upkeep for X military units in the 2nd column, thats many units is how much it will cost you under pacifism. Now hover over civic upkeep and see how much you would save.

I don't know is there a difference. I think that upkeep comes from military. 1 gold/unit. So the idea is that if you have nice run towards great persons and you don't have massive military, than it's useful. So if you are not planning to invade anybody and you have only defensive force, use it. You will notice when putting mouse over it that how much it would cost at its current moment.

You need religioin for it to work. If you have large army (youll know when it's large) it might be devastating to switch it on. But look on the bright side and try it.. you can always switch it something else after 5 turns :)

Btw.. I was talking about warlords, not bts

no upkeeep comes from pop. I know that it works for great persons allready. And Civdude you are sure its that number(-handicap assumign your not over allready)? How do you calc it if it doesnt show? there is a formula somewhere right?
