Paintings

Wow. Definately agree with you there. Maybe this could be included in the game somewhere?

according to the lore, an expert artist (whom I forget the name of) was imprisoned for life for building a statue, and while in prison, he made hundreds of little stone people, all incredibly life-like. When he was old and about to die, Kilmorph came to him and allowed him one wish. He wished that he would not be alone when he died, and Kilmorph granted this wish by bringing all of the statues he built in prison to life. They took care of him until his death, and he rode to the afterlife on a great dragon. The people eventually tunneled out and became what we now know as the dwarfs.

read Bambur's civlopedia article for the full story.

EDIT: some of these pics could be cropped and used though.

As an aspiring artist myself I fell the need to remind you these images are copyrighted property of the owner, and not to be reproduced without the artists consent. All of the images Kael uses for FFH (most of which are by the amazing artist Jason Engle), are used with permission from the artist. Just because you can copy and paste the picture off the interweb does not mean you do not need to give the artist credit for their work.

This isn't true. I try to contact artists but the only one I've heard from is Jason Engle (because he was at a convention in Columbus and I went down to meet him). The others are used without permission, though I wish I could hear from them and I would definitly pull anything they wanted if they didn't want it to be in the mod.

I did ask Jason, how did he think other artists of his stature would feel about us using their art without permission. Of course he said he cant speak for them but that its fairly common in the fantasy community for fans to use pictures for personal use and he's never known anyone who minded. He says the real problem comes up when people try to use the material for corporate purposes (selling products with the art), but use in mods/websites/online stories/etc is common and understood (as long as its credited). The fact that we encourage donations to Unicef makes that all the better.

That isn't a legal arguement at all and doesnt bypass copywright law. But these artists are my heroes and I have been following most of them for years before FfH was made. Their art inspires the mod and the D&D games I made since I was a teenager. I have no desire to offend them and I hope that the use of their material in FfH serves to help their business, not hurt it.

So for now I assume that the artists would be okay with our use of their material. If I heard otherwise from any of them they would recieve immediate apologies from me and their material would be removed from the mod without question. Thats my personal take on it.

I have posted the link because I just wanted to share what I found and liked. But as the topic of using the art in a mod appeared I made some research on the site.
There's a link from the mainsite voytek-art leading to the site of Studio Armata, apparently an art studio created by the artist and his son (?). In Studio's resume you can read that their art is used in a number of computer games, including Civ IV!

Here's the link

The reason I'm posting this is to make a point that if you ask for permission to use the art in a mod, at least they should know what you're talking about and perhaps care to give a reply.

They seem to have made the Collossus model for the Cultural victory cinematic, and also a ship I think is seen in the same video.

Artists should be glad to let us put their artwork here though. Playing FFH introduced me to Jason Engles artwork, and i've bought quite a few of his works.

Sorry for my misinformation in the earlier post

Well since I was once on the receiving end of three, rightfully, wrathful artists I feel that a small warning is in order. If you like this persons art and want to use it in a mod then simply e-mail him a message and tell him about it first.

I love fantasy art and have sort of made a hobby out of creating portraits for various games, mostly the Infinity Engine series, and my experience is similar to Kaels. If you just ask the artist for permission you almost always get it. Heck, some are even happy to hear about it. It's not so much that they mind their images popping up all over the place, it's the fact that they don't receive credit for it and noone bother to ask them if they were ok about it.

I know it might not be easy but I think it would be a good idea if Kael could insert the artists name in the civilopedia entries. FFH wouldn't be half as good without the incredible art in it, but I don't even know the names of half the artists involved.

But I understand if that's not practically possible. I got tons of images with no idea where I found them, let alone who created them.

Their names are found in many places. The readme, the first post of the forum thread (The one with 7k+ posts and over a million views) and in several threads in this forum.

But sure, their names could be in more places, including the civiliopedia, and it would be nice if all artists had given their permission.
