Sorry if this is elsewhere, I looked and couldn't find it.

Also, please accept my apology in advance for being an idiot and a n00b.

I've never played any Civ games before this one and so I'm still working it out by reading here and trial-and-error-ing during my games.

Palaces.

Someone explain this to me?

How many can I build?

How many should I build?

Where should I build them?

Why, when I've built one in a city, does it disappear sometimes and not other times?

Should I rebuild it when it does disappear?

basically, any and all info (as in depth as possible) on Palaces would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

you people are all awesome.

heh

There is only one Palace.

You start off with it in your capitol. If you find the capitol is not in a good location (ie, on the far side of your kingdom), you can rebuild the palace in a more centralized city. However, there is also the Forbidden Palace which you can build later on and you can build it to act as a "second" palace without having to actually relocate your current palace.

The reason the palace's location can be important is because the farther your cities are from your palace, the more expensive they are to keep up. So you want the palace in a relatively central city. If you get fortunate and expand your empire/kingdom out from your initial capitol, then you shouldn't ever need to rebuild your palace.

Of course it takes time and resources to move your palace, so you want to relocate it at strategic times and not constantly move it.

You get one "Palace" so you shouldnt build another :O If that icty is destroyed you get anotehr in another city. If you build one elsewhere, the original dissappears. There are some buildigns that work kind of like palaces but not to the full extend. Forbitten Palace is one, I believe you need 6 courthouses to build one.

dangit.

I can't believe what a moron I am.

I saw the +8 gold on it and thought I could build a palace in every city... and so... i... proceeded... to try to do that.

man am I dense.

ok, so thanks for clearing that up.

In addition to the Forbidden palace (a national wonder), you can also build Versailles (a world wonder), that acts as a palace.

Very handy if you conquer another civ or have a large presence on another continent.

You only get one palace which is situated in the first city you build, but you can "relocate" the palace by building the "palace improvement" in a different city. Upon completion of the new palace the old one will disappear.

Think of the palace as the centre of your government, and the further away from the palace a city is the more it costs to run its administration. So, ideally, you would build your new cities around the original city so as to lessen the amount of gold that gets spent on upkeep.

Clearly this is not always possible, for instance if your first city is founded on the coast and your subsequent cities spread out to the East or West. In this case it might be to your advantage to build a new palace in a more centrally located city to cut down on the total city maintenance cost.

There are some wonders, both national and world, that can be built that cut down on distance related maintenance as well.

I laughed. More from your series of events than your ignorance, the latter inflicts us all at one time or another.

yeah, well, that's ok... heh..

I kept wondering why it was telling me that building a palace in Antium was an option everytime I'd build one in another city...

and I also kept wondering why my gold +/- didn't seem to adjust itself + 8 everytime I completed a palace.

looking back now, I wonder how I didn't pick up on that.

anyways, this game totally rules... my fiancee is ALREADY sick of it and I haven't had it a month yet...

:goodjob:

a support forum!!

what a great idea...

my fiancee just doesn't understand my drive to steam-roll an entire continent and wipe civ after civ off the map...

maybe there could be some sort of program to help our women-folk understand that drive?

Usually it involves something artistic like painting or drawing or freelance webdesign/graphic design.

she's far more creative/artistic than me... heh

Hey, I saw women getting obsessed with Civilization II. Maybe you guys should introduce civ to your wives by cunning.
Or if you have only one computer available, I say, you shouldn't :)
