Palmyra, Collab Mod

Here's another one:

Leader: Zenobia

UA: Pearl of the Desert: :trade: Trade Routes generate :c5goldenage: Golden Age points equal to their worth. :c5goldenage: Golden Ages increase Wonder Production and can be lengthen by expending :c5greatperson: Great People.

UU: Clibanarii: Replaces Horseman. Starts with Cover I. Generates :c5greatperson: Great Generals twice as fast and transfers movement to them when stacked.

UI: Funerary Tower: Available at Construction. May only be built on desert tiles. +1 :c5culture: Culture and +1 :c5faith: Faith. An additional +1 :c5faith: Faith for every adjacent Funerary Tower. Funerary Towers generate :c5greatperson: Great People points whenever a Caravan passes over them. +1 :c5culture: Culture upon researching Archaeology.

Any thoughts on this one?

Yeah I can say this as a final design, the Golden Age thing is extremely random though (those guys didnt have much of a Golden Age that's for sure...) but in practice its the same thing so yeah.

I'd say yes to this one as a final idea, what do other people think?

I was wondering what you thought of mine, it unfortunately happened to be the last post on the page. I rather like his design, althought I'm not a fan of the UA, since Palmyra didn't really have much of a golden age. I just want to know your opinion, so that I can improve for the future.

Palmyremene Empire
Capital: Palmyra

UA: Trade Routes with other Civilizations provide extra Gold and Production. Religious buildings provide +5% Wonder Production.

UU: Clibanarii - Palmyremene replacement for the Horseman. In addition to having a slightly higher Combat Strength, Clibanarii do not take extra damage from units with Formation or Bonus vs Mounted.

UI: Tomb Tower - Requires Pottery to build. Provides +1 Faith and +1 Culture. Provides an additional +1 Faith after discovering Theology and an additional +1 Culture and Tourism after discovering Archeology. May only be built on Desert tiles.

I quite liked Uighurs, quite complex and unique in it's own right, but I can't imagine the Lua will be too hard!

Glad to see this has gotten lots of attention so far!

Wow, what a cheap cash-in on a tragedy. You know where the money is, Firebug. Kudos.

Also might pay to ask TPangolin and Nix before you nick the art they did specifically for Hiram, that someone brought up in an earlier post. Taking advantage of an absent modder is also so tasteful.

That's a tad harsh, what exactly are you insinuating?

Ok, first off Jan, I completely respect other people's work and i have the upmost respect for your artwork and what you contribute to this community.

Second, I'm a big fan of history and it generally troubles me that extremists think its ok to vandalise human culture. That's why i contacted other people through steam and asked them about helping collab on a mod.

Third, i am not cashing-in because there is no money, fame or gain from me trying to gather together a community which (i hope) is a community of people that enjoy history as much as i do. The most i can gain from this is having a mod on the steam workshop that spends a week on the first page (with a load of other people credited as authors, not just me).

Fourth, i never once said i would use that artwork. The only things said were

Wow, way to steal a civ from Hiram. You might be interested in this stuff from his thread though:

I'll just go ahead and be honest right now. I don't appreciate you coming onto this thread and saying i stole from an idea 3 years ago (i only started modding late last year). Not only is "stealing" a stupid word for historical civilizations but this thread was created to try and bring people together to help make a civilization in memory of the history we've lost in extremely recent times.

It doesn't matter if it was almost done, or if Hiram was really "important", i wanted to make this mod, other people want to make this mod.

(excuse my rant, this thread was going so nicely and i didn't really want to post anything negative.)

S
Please do take a look at the art though, as a civ like Palmyra deserves a good leaderscene.

i never asked SargontheGreat to post this for me to use.

Before i made this thread, i contacted ryanjames, davey_henninger and superwaffle. They agreed on a thread being made. People were pretty up for the idea of remembering a nation that is now nothing but piles of stone and dust.

I've been in steam chats with a few people, talking to them about the mod and how it'll work, trying to balance it out and working WITH them, not USING them.

A while ago i had wanted to make a Palmyra mod but i fell short with not enough research, art or ideas. Due to recent times i thought it'd be quite nice to bring a community together, to make a mod together and to maybe create a mod everyone can enjoy.

Spoiler :
and i won't forget Jan, that in the past you accused me of not giving credit to JFD for his amazing work on Thebes.

I love the smell of modding drama in the morning.

In all seriousness, what is with all this? No one has ownership on an unmade mod. Ideas are not copyrighted. Hiram had an idea and was piecing it together. He didn't get around releasing it. Taking the same concept with a whole different idea and using unused assets... there's actually nothing wrong with that.

People want to make this mod. It's a mod that hasn't actually been released to this day. Let them do it.

I wanted to avoid drama, but it seems to follow me around for no good reason. This was an attempt at bringing modders together to make something, and up until now the thread was going great.

One of my least favorite things in the entire world is hypocrisy and I believe Jan is guilty of it here when he referred to Firebug "cashing in." IIRC both JFD and MC released their Scotland civs the same week of the Scottish referendum. I believe this fits Jan's definition of a "cheap cash-in." Despite being a "cheap cash-in" by his standards, which he is quite clearly against, Jan did art for both of them.

I really didn't want to bring other people who have nothing to do with the current discussion in here, but it pisses me off tremendously that Jan has the audacity to be outraged by Firebug doing something that he's done in the past.

It's... basic marketing.

There's nothing wrong with marketing! Why are we having people pissed off by that?

But i'm not doing it for marketing! I'm doing it because its horrible and i believe making a mod of a civilization is a good way to keep a culture remembered (even if only by a small amount of people, Civ V players.)

Well, lets put things back on track then, and hope that Jan gives you an apology.

In regards to the art, I think that, considering the Zenobia LS is, pretty damn awesome, you should try and get permission to use it, it's not everyday you get such an LS, so I'd go ask TPangolin if you can use it. I'd also try to contact Hiram and see what he thinks.

If he doesn't reply and is basically inactive, then it's safe to use some of his assets, just put him in the credits, I'm sure he'll be thrilled that a Palmyra mod is being released either way.

I request the use of other peoples art as a last resort, as opposed to every chance i have. I like to try and do my own art when possible, and if i can't find enough material to use for my own LS then i'll contact TPangolin and attempt contact with Hiram.

Hmm... How about that design?

Palmyrene Empire(Zenobia)
UA: The Golden Spot
Each :trade: trade route you send increases the amount of :c5greatperson: great merchant points you gain upon completing a :c5war: military or a gold building. Gain :c5goldenage: golden age points from expanding to tiles per each trade route passing through them. Those tiles generate +1 :c5gold: gold during golden ages.

UU: Patron
Replaces great merchant. May not be used to perform a trade mission. However, may be used as a unique caravan, which has a vision range and may :c5strength: defend itself, in addition to having 33% more range. Boosts military :c5production: production when used this way.

UU: Clibanarii
Replaces horseman. More expansive to construct, the Clibanarii is also stronger(16 :c5strength:), and has a 33% bonus when :c5war: attacking, increased to 50% against mounted units.

Anyway, how about some E&D ideas:

Decision: Build the Temple of Baal/Bel (whatever you want to call it. I personally use Baal)

Requirements: Must be at least the Classical Era
Must have a religion in your capital

Costs: X :c5gold: Gold
X :c5production: Production in your capital

Rewards: X Faith
The Temple of Baal/Bel is built in your capital
Temple of Baal/Bel: +3 :c5culture: Culture and +3 :c5faith: Faith. +4 :tourism: Tourism after researching Archaeology. 25% of this city's :c5faith: Faith is converted to :c5greatperson: Great General points.

The Great General points come from the fact that Palmyrene gods were warlike. I'm not sure how much the costs or rewards should be. Any thoughts?

I still think the funerary tower UI would be a nice feature, there has to be a model for like a generic middle eastern style tower somewhere

I like the idea of a UI, especially since the funerary towers are such an iconic aspect (and are some of the most recent artifacts destroyed). Would they fall under the Levant area religions (thinking of HR compatibility)?
