I rarely recommend other games on game-specific forums, but this game deserves a special mention. In short, it is a remake of the Panzer General (and Allied General), a game that works on Windows 7 and with FullHD monitors.

The guy that made the game added a lot of useful features, but the most interesting thing is what he did to the AI. Radical changes, at least compared to the original Panzer General. All the stuff that we discuss in these threads, especially questions about how and if the AI can handle "one unit per tile" and "grand strategy" can be reviewed by playing this game and the supporting threads.

Well, before going in to see. It's best to see what the SDK or any Modding tools will be available.

I was thinking of trying it out but I can run PG and AG on Winxp. There seems to be many great features in PGF but I've also heard about some problems or areas where it's worse. For example the AI is said to be better in some cases like firing then moving into protection range of artillery but I've also heard about some issues like the AI moving their artillery to the front of their army or attacking armored units with trucks.
There seems to be other issues as well like movement animations being absent creating confusion sometimes as to what the AI is doing. I also dislike that you can't scout out the enemy when you're placing your troops at the start of a map.

Right now I'm waiting for an update to see if any of these issues are adressed (the placement thing unfortunately seems to be WAI).

A Panzer General inspired mod for Civ5 sounds like just about the most inevitable mod and/or scenario one could imagine. I'm sure legions of WWII obsessed artists are salivating at this very moment at the opportunity to create countless high-poly German tank and plane models.

The artillery thing is partially true. It never "moves" an artillery piece to the front, but it can "purchase" an artillery piece in a tactically poor position (for example, on a vunerable river tile next to the city).
The AI never attacks with trucks, and never armoured units, but it does attack infantry or artillery with armoured transports. And it does this only in Allied General from my observation, as Axis. But this is valid tactics because I do it as well, especially if I know there's not enemy armor around. When I'm attacking with infantry or artillery, its harder for me to kill German infantry in armoured truck than it is when they are in the open.

There are some worse issues there with the AI, like it mass-building units in non-important areas of the map. The actual tactical decisions are pretty good.

Besides, one can always put the AI to "Basic", which is basically the original PG AI.

(CYBA)KirbyTron: It's good to know it's not as bad as I've heard. I do the armoured transport vs soft target attacks as well when I play Axis.
I'm still pretty bummed about the placement thing though. I know it works the same way in PG dos but I'd really like to scout the enemy frontline before making a tactical decision about where to place my units like you can in the win version.

Oh, holy crap. The original Panzer General pretty much destroyed the academic year of 1994-1995 for me. Must... download... remake...

It's a great game, it's actually hard to get Major Victories on most maps - so the AI is not that bad!! :D

My favourite tool in PG Forever was now you can see the battle result breakdown, including initiative.
