Paradigm Shift Reboot! Queen of Culture 2

I would settle 1E as you might be able to avoid settling desert later to claim those grasslands.

Edit: Actually the corn will only give +3 food as it's not irrigated but it's still worth it as BW is only a tech away, there's an unforested hill.

Cathy Queen of Culture II - First Round! (to 2640BC)

An interesting round. Looks ideal for a cultural victory this map. I'm pleased.

Firstly, I moved the settler to the East.

Civ4ScreenShot0005-2.jpg

I start building a worker and researching agriculture. Scout sees the first hut.

Civ4ScreenShot0007-1.jpg

My favourite goody hut result - a map of the Ocean ;).

Civ4ScreenShot0008-2.jpg

I'll probably want a city around here at some point... I wont be able to get the whales and the sheep though.

Civ4ScreenShot0009-2.jpg

I move my scout inland after a brief look at the southwestern area. Mostly deserts here.

Civ4ScreenShot0010-2.jpg

Another hut. And Buddhim is founded. I don't go for early religions much anyway.

Civ4ScreenShot0012-2.jpg

Agriculture is in, still 6 turns for a worker. I think about fishing next but with the trees around I go for Bronze Working instead.

Civ4ScreenShot0013-2.jpg

I get 51 gold from the hut. Lots of flood plains and some gold around here.

Civ4ScreenShot0015-2.jpg

Then I meet Hatty. She is one of my favourite AIs, she is easy to get along with.

Civ4ScreenShot0016-2.jpg

Egypt is fairly close by.

Civ4ScreenShot0017-2.jpg

A warrior next after the worker.

Civ4ScreenShot0018-2.jpg

Another hut gives me a free tech! Yay!

Civ4ScreenShot0019-2.jpg

It's a good tech to get from a hut. Any horses about?

Civ4ScreenShot0020-2.jpg

Nope, just lots of gold and stone in a rather mediocre place.

My scout got mauled by a lion, but it was worth it to get the tech from the hut.

Civ4ScreenShot0021-2.jpg

A farm is built near Moscow.

Civ4ScreenShot0022-2.jpg

Moscow grows to size 2, time the next pop increase with the warrior build ending.

Cathy Queen of Culture 2: Round 1 part 2 - to 2640BC

Bronze working is in

Civ4ScreenShot0024-2.jpg

But I can't see any copper about. Fishing next.

Civ4ScreenShot0025-2.jpg

Finished the mine, but I keep working the higher food tile.

Civ4ScreenShot0026-2.jpg

I DON'T revolt to slavery straight away. I prefer to do that when my first settler is on the way to city site #2, or I need to whip away some unhappies.

This looks like a good area for city #2.

Civ4ScreenShot0029-2.jpg

Fishing is in, I go for the wheel next, it makes pottery cheaper and I want to connect my next city to the capital quickly.

Civ4ScreenShot0032-2.jpg

I finally find a strategic resource, there are Horses near Hatty. I may have to claim this site sharpish, or else research Iron Working for defence against War Chariots.

Civ4ScreenShot0033-2.jpg

In the meantime my first warrior has been checking out proposed city #2 site. I'm building a settler and chopping a mine on a grassland hill, so the settler wont take long.

Civ4ScreenShot0034-2.jpg

Settler about to finish, I switch to max commerce for a bit. Workboat next.

Civ4ScreenShot0035-2.jpg

This continent looks like Australia. It's pretty small, an it looks like it's just me and Hatty, so she'll have to go at some point after building some nice cities for Cathy. I really need to get Iron Working .

Civ4ScreenShot0037-2.jpg

That's the best screeny for y'all to do your dotmaps...

I saved when my settler was about to set off. I'm also undecided whether to send the worker out with the settler, or chop forests near the capital. I'm thinking send the worker with the settler - the capital can build workboats and another worker in the meantime. I'll need another warrior too.

Here's the save:

I just won a cultural victory myself with Huayna. Was pretty neat!
Based on my past game, my general advice would be to make your way to
1) a religion and spread it!
2) Music to open up Cathedrals and of course the Sistine Chapel.
3) make sure you have at least 9 cities (9 to have 9 temples so you can have 3 cathedrals (+50% Culture) in your 3 to be legendary cities)

Most important though is to never neglect your defense or power rating.

Have fun!

Indeed, but with this semi-isolated start plans can be a bit different.

I'll try and found Confucianism and Taoism.

Power can be ignored until I meet more neighbours after optics (once Hatty is no more).

I just got a 1790AD win with Qin in GMaj36, that was marathon speed on Pangaea with Kublai, Monty, Isabella and a warlike Cyrus (plus Mansa and Napoleon). It was fun!

EDIT: I'll try and leave Hatty alone until she founds an early religion.

i think this continent is too small for both of you..
especially her capital is a city you would want to have

imo, grab the stone+horse south, and prepare for a war

I would make it a priority getting any gold resource online. My choice would be Blue city # 1 because there is stone there also which will greatly help you build some useful wonders .
DM1.jpg

After the gold is online, iron working (and every tech after that) will be in much faster. My third city would be a definite strategic resource. Hatty usually isn't all that aggresive so I would gamble that iron appears on your side of this continent.

Waiting for her to found a religion and then taking the whole continent would be a good strategy, I reckon.

Im curious how you'll play the next round!

I was thinking maybe the blue city next. The horse city is purely a choke tactic vs Hatty, has no growth potential. I think I can wait until construction to kill Hatty myself.

By the way, you dotmapped the capital location incorrect, it is 1NE of where you have it, which makes yellow question mark better.

EDIT: The blue city is low food as well. Calendar looks like a high priority as well.

EDIT2: 1NE of the rice looks like the only other good city spot, apart from Hatty's capital of course ;)

You're right! Sorry about that.
By the way, seeing the size (or lack thereof) of this continent I wouldn't be surpised if hatty doesn't have copper either. But then again, there might be a whole landmass in the fog behind Hatty.

Maybe, we'll see after writing.

I wouldn't build the blue city one tile from the coast.

I don't think Horses are a high priority - that Horse city doesn't look too strong, and Chariots won't conquer Hatty anyhow.

Research Archery for barb defense, then get Construction.

Remember that even without Copper, Iron, Ivory or Horses; Catapults will still make it easy to conquer Hatty, even paired up with measly Archers.

I'd like to know where the iron is before I get construction though.

Archery might be a good plan, may do that after the wheel. Then I'm thinking pottery->iron working->writing.

the horse city is simply to prevent hatty to get horse, and you get a stone as extra
the city is low on food (cant grow), but it is a strategic city anyway

either you tech archery>horsebackriding>kill hatty with flanking horsearcher
or you wait for construction

you must kill hatty ASAP
her capital is full of gold and food, which will boost your research greatly
if you want great cities for your legendary, you need to take down hatty first

If you're going for CoL to grab confu then its likely that your second city will become the confu holy city and quite likely one of your legendary cities. With that in mind I'd look to settle it somewhere around the gold and floodplains south of Hats. Research IW next. Its likely that you'll have iron around (tho not 100% guaranteed its a good gamble) and that will determine location of the next city. Eliminate Hats sooner rather than later, if she's going to found Judaism she'll get it before you're ready to wipe her out and her capital is likely to be your best bet for legendary city#3.

I think I'll have 3 cities by the time CoL is researched (sheep one probably).

I think going horseback riding after archery would set my economy back a bit too much myself, I'd rather wait until construction while building cottages and a library in the capital, then get a quick academy up from running scientists.

But I am open to suggestions. It's an interesting map, if a bit low on food.

EDIT: If I found a stone city and the sheep city, I might build the 'Mids in the sheep city with its high production. Isolated will mean representation is big.

i wouldnt cottage the the capital, but farm and run scientists instead
you can whip a lot there :)
i would cottage the sheep city (and probably build mids there)
if you want to wait for construction and build mids, i would block top stone/rice too

otherwise, horsebackriding and whip for horsearcher
it will set your economy a bit back, but you can easily recover if you get hatty's gold

also, dont spawn more than 3 GS, because it will make GA spawn harder later :)

I can only farm one tile (W of capital) until civil service. So I'll build a couple of cottages in the capital I think. I won't go mad though. They'll be handy to reduce growth until I can run more specialists.

Rush Hatty with something. The land is mediocre at best, as they say.

hmm you dont need cottage imo, because you cant work on them anyway

3 clam+2 mines+1 corn+1 farm = population 7 (what is monarch happy cap?)

you need monarchy or mids first :)

unless you want to reduce growth, (but i would just maximize growth, and whip)
