Hmm, I'm not really sure whether I like the patch or not. The pro's vs. the cons:
Pro:
Ending a turn goes much faster. In a huge (12 civ, 24 city states) game around 1850 (normall speed) my time betwee turns went down from 3-4 min to 30 sec. Great improvement
Cons:
Bugs, lots of bugs! Already (in a 10 min game) encountered the following:
- When a new turn starts it takes some time (i.e. after the 30 seconds mentioned above). It will still say 'next turn' even though everyone is finished (takes about 30-60 sec. to disappear)
- The CPU becomes much more active. Before it would only start my fan when ending a turn (i.e. when calculating what the AI would do), now it is on all the time (I have the feeling the pc is already the calcullating the AI while I'm doing my move, hence the decreased loading time)
- Bug in diplomacy: I was offered a renewall of open borders and when I agreed the game didn'tgo back to the map, rather it stayed at the diplomacy screen with the Inca's without any options. Hitting escape helped me get back to the map, but after 60 sec. the function 'back' appeared out of nowhere on the bottom of the screen (which normally appears in the diplomacy screen after accepting the agreement)
- Before you saw the AI move his units during the change of turn. now, it first calculates everything (very quickly), but the moving is done after these calculations (i.e. you don't see 'washingstons turn ' at the bottom anymore, it looks like it's you turn but he's still moving his units). Very irritating.
- The scoreboard is on top of the messages. This means with the scoreboard open you can't see what's happening (i.e. if a city state is taken over you can'tsee this because the scoreboard is over it, when you hover over the message with your mouse it won' display any popup). Because turns are so freaking fast now (which is good!) all messages appear at the same time. This means you don't get time to read them as soon as they appear.
See also this screenshot:
- The scoreboard is now mainly grayed out. Before, my name was grey while the rest was easily readable, now it'sthe other way around (see also the screenshot): everyone's name is grey, besides mine.
- After only 5 turns I had a crash to desktop. not sure if this is related to the patch, as I have crashes about 2 times a day when playing (around every 2 hours). Might be coincidence. Happened during a change of turns. (happened twice already now, in 30 min. of playing!)
- Sometimes after a turn ends the 'moving world' that is your mouse doesn't change back into a normal cursor, but stays a world.
- A deal ended in which I provided fur for one time gold. AI wanted to renew this, which gave me two bugs: again, I couldn't leave the screen (the second time already), two: the message I got on the right (right before crashing) said that the deal had ended. However, I just renewed it. This wasn't the case before as far as I know.
Ok, great. Game keeps crashing during the end of this turn. I have the feeling the game can't cope with the fact that I have an AI that wants to renew a deal with me, while it also has to show me a list of who's doing how well (you know, the top 12 who got the most science/food etc.) while I also research something the same turn. It tries to display them all at the same time (i.e. I see the background of diplomacy, with the top 12 over it, after which when I click the button to stop the top 12 it starts speaching about my research (which it doesn't show yet). Whether I refuse the deal or not makes no difference. So, this basically means my game, 270 turns in is screwed.
Thanks for this great patch, not!
Did they actually test this patch before releasing it?
Edit: sorry for messing up the lay-out with my screenshot, but I don't know how to change that.
