Interesting copyright discussion. ;) Posting these patch files is a grey area, in my mind. We're discussing it in Staff. If we change our mind, the posts we be "re-enabled" :)

The patch was released to those who owned a legal copy of the game. If anything, by removing the patch after knowingly making the release, they have deprived a portion of the owners of something that belongs to them. How's that for a take on things?

Also, the writer is correct, monetary gain is not an issue when infringing on copyright. But... screenshots would certainly be deemed "fair use" by just about anyone.

I knew something was wrong when I installed the patch and popups completely disappeared and wouldn't come back no matter how many times I set the option

After installing the patch, I only lost the tech-notification pop-ups : no more Biblical quotes, no more Mr Spock.

Very sloppy by Firaxis and company all things considered. Bet there was a horrid moment there end when they realised that they have FUBAR'ed to such an extent they'd have to yank it. Going to be such pretty fires as this will be fuel to the flamers :D

Thanks for spurting your very own fuel...kitty.

Not necessarily. Firaxis' version numbers always seem to move forward by leaps and bounds, when you think about it. I see this as a sign that internally, they probably had 7 release candidates before settling for the one they thought was ready (1.08).

Reminds me of a patch release we did here (in a totally different software field). An hour after making it available, a tester found a showstopper bug in it, which I fixed in about 30 minutes. We were both pretty happy about how things had turned out (since we had found and fixed the bug before it could do real harm to any of our customers) until the tester got reprimanded for not having found the bug earlier and our QA sat on the fix for two weeks before releasing it. Sometimes, you just can't win.

I don't doubt similar stuff is going on at Firaxis right now.
Back in Civ3, Firaxis said that was how it worked. :goodjob:

And, being a professional computer geek, I can sympathize, and agree with your assessment. ;)

It seems to have something to do with old XML error problem.
I had same problem after installing the withdrawn patch. (Option screen text, tech-notification pop-up, and likes )
So I copied ...\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Assets\xml\text\CIV4GameText_New.xml to My Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\CustomAssets\xml\text\CIV4GameText_New.xml and edited the offending </Italian> tags. ( search with "?/Italian>" )
Then all problem except world builder menu has gone away.

Yar, downloaded and installed... updated from 1.08 to 1.09 with no problems.. yay!
