Bet there was a horrid moment there end when they realised that they have FUBAR'ed to such an extent they'd have to yank it.

In my line of work this amount of time is known as an "Oh sh-- second"

As in, that exact moment between hitting "enter" on a command and then realizing what you have done: "And all looks like we are all set, now...enter. Ok, so, next, we should . . . Oh sh--!!"

I bet Firaxis is pissed at 2kgames for damaging their rep. The publisher is responsible for QA and 2k has obviously done a poor job. They couldn't even get the distribution right, either- French tech trees, mislabeled discs, etc.

they'd better learn something from this!!! creating MUCH anticipation, loads of adrenaline followed by disappointment and even more adrenaline then before

GRRRR

P.S. Where's the bloody patch..... :twitch:

Probably a good reason for yanking it.

Very sloppy by Firaxis and company all things considered. Bet there was a horrid moment there end when they realised that they have FUBAR'ed to such an extent they'd have to yank it.

Going to be such pretty fires as this will be fuel to the flamers :D

I don't think a bug as minor as goody huts would have been enough to pull the patch. Seeing as how my graphical issues continued after the patch, I'm thinking that some of the most critical issues were NOT fixed, and that's why the patch was pulled. Also, it was made available through the game rather than on the official websites...so I'm of the opinion that the patch was released by mistake. It probably went like this:

QA#1 : Well, we're done. I've put the patch up for download.

QA#2 : Wait, you did what?

QA#1 : I put the patch up for download...

QA#2 : BUT IT'S NOT DONE YET!!!

QA#1 : You said it was!!

QA#2 : No I said the AI tweaking was done! The graphical glitches haven't been touched yet!

QA#1 : Doh...

I just wanted to note another bug that's cropped up in the leaked patch. My caravels can only load one unit, even though it only says 1/3 full.

Version 1.08...

What were the other 7 (1.01-1.07) patches that we missed?

Those are test versions. The official patches are usually 1.1 versions.

that scenario surely would have gotten someone fired!

oh well, at least they try their utmost to supply us with good material for the forums ey :crazyeye:

EDIT: @ Stuporstar, you mean your caravals could hold multiple units before?;)
it only transports ONE explorer or other 'weak' unit (weak option by the way) read the units section

Or they created something worse than they fixed. Like a security hole in MP or something. That would certainly be cause for a recall.

Ok, some words from me. Those who don't know yet, I'm on the way with my own patch. No, I don't try to fix diplomacy issues and others, they're deep in machine code. I try to solve slowness problem from DirectX point (BTW, I've read all 20 pages and didn't see if it's really solved by this patch - just faster grid toggling was noted).

I think there is probably some other coder(s) trying to do the same thing and sell it to Firaxis (and with their situtation price might be high); especially taking in mind how many info I give away for free in "memory leak" thread about how this issue can be fixed.

What's funny is that coder will need to send a demo version to Firaxis to show that he has something to sell. This demo version might start telling somwething weird on each 13th day of each month - something terrible about Firaxis, so that they won't silently put this demo as the oficial patch part. I just thought myself how would I trade with Firaxis, should I succeed with my efforts...

Probably Firaxis did use such demo and then detected that "sh*t in the code" they didn't see by release date... So they had to retract it as quickly as possible and ban any leak outside.

I don't claim this is true, most probably not... just some thougts :)

Most obvious glitch was that you could not open World Builder from the menu by clicking on it. You could only open it from the hoykeys, CTRL-W.

This in itself would be enough to pull the patch, and I'm sure someone found it and complained within minutes of installing.

Question is, how could Q&A let such an obvious bug get through...part of their job is to click on everything to see if it works...this is such a glaring lapse to anyone who has worked in Q&A before. I remember spending hours clicking away on menus - every menu, every link, right click, left click, middle click - to simply see if they worked. This menu is one of the main ones. Should not have been missed.

Here is a rumor.

2: Have you made a patch?
F: Not yet.
2: Hurry up! Marketing is terrible. All fault is yours.
F: What? ok, Take this.
2: Is it Final Version? fixed all?
F: I told you I sent it on monday. That's all.
2: [2 declared war on F]I leak 1.08 out, without announcemet, included a huge of bugs.
F: What are you doing now?
2: We have nothing to say at this time.
F: OK, We released the demo.

To be continue...

Is there a way to uninstall the patch w/o uninstaling the game? I left my install cd at my brothers house 4 hours away :(

You know, I could have sworn they did. Hmm...maybe it's a bug they fixed. Or maybe I'm just confused. It happens sometimes. ;)

In any case, it sucks.

Don't think so.

Try FedEx....when it absolutely has to be there by 10....;)

I knew something was wrong when I installed the patch and popups completely disappeared and wouldn't come back no matter how many times I set the option (Sid's Tips and the diplomacy popup that shows the +1/-1 modifiers when talking to another leader). Before, it would turn off randomly, and I'd have to wait out a few turns for them to come back. Now they were gone completely. Very frustrating. So I guess I'll have to wait another week before I bother playing again.

Not necessarily. Firaxis' version numbers always seem to move forward by leaps and bounds, when you think about it. I see this as a sign that internally, they probably had 7 release candidates before settling for the one they thought was ready (1.08).

Reminds me of a patch release we did here (in a totally different software field). An hour after making it available, a tester found a showstopper bug in it, which I fixed in about 30 minutes. We were both pretty happy about how things had turned out (since we had found and fixed the bug before it could do real harm to any of our customers) until the tester got reprimanded for not having found the bug earlier and our QA sat on the fix for two weeks before releasing it. Sometimes, you just can't win.

I don't doubt similar stuff is going on at Firaxis right now.
