can we play games in progress after applying the patch?

Hey, I kind of liked Civ 1's combat... Sure, it was frustrating when you had an unlucky streak and lost half a dozen units against one inferior defender, but hey, bad things happen. It makes the game more interesting when things don't always go as well as planned--otherwise, you might as well play a game that consists of one big button labeled "YOU WIN."

This opinion was, of course, stated by someone whose moniker includes the word, "random."

(PS. I agree.)

know any1 when the patch will be released ?
or know any1 work firaxis on a addon to civ3 ?

Exellent- more editing mods, a better UI would be nice.
More patches than the tobacco industry!
Thanks for the e-mail.

not sure how to do the quote thing but I have a quote per week-this weeks quote:

"Day after day they take some brain away.","and tell me that it`s real, then ask me how I feel."-David Bowie(All the madmen)

somebody earlier asked who uses the editor....good question, and it's a very small minority. say 200 thousand units (or whatever) of civ III are sold, how many of those players would understand anything being discussed in this thread, or care for that matter. it's only a tiny percentage of civ III players who want to know the ins and outs, right down to some infinitesimal detail. as an average civ player, i've just spent the last 20 mins reading through this thread - it's really quite amusing the excitement being generated over some tiny little detail. don't get me wrong, good luck to you, whatever turns you on. just bear in mind that it's only a handful of you that a lot of these changes will really mean anything. most of us don't want to have to go in and tweak this and change that - we just want press 'start' and play the game - a balanced, bug-free game. it's very apparent that some of you would be lost if it were that simple.

don't take it all so seriously - it's just a game. there's something out there called a 'real life', with real people......that can be quite fun aswell.

i should stress that this is in no way a criticism, just a thought and a comment from someone who should know better ;)

:Sniper: :Sniper: :sniper: Sorry but i dont really have the time to create maps in civ 3 i just play maps, although i really did love makeing maps in Starcraft and i did to work my ass of so dont critisize me!

Real Life - I thought this was real life?????
thats more brain gone. - see previous message quote.
This is more than a game, it changes lives. Read some of the other threads.

The editor is there to keep the game open, some cheat and others create.

You can just play (for days and days and months and years)
without mods, try editing!?! (frustration will reign guarenteed)

Ok, I like it. Especially the abandon city option. I think I'll love that.. :)

What are you?? Stupid!!!!

One thing that I thought was missing from the fix is that worker actions are still hard coded. If we could get some flexibility there it would be great! Terraforming, double irrigation, airstrip ability would all be really nice additions, and I would think that allowing flexibility wouldn't be too hard.

Great plan, something along the lines of a foreward firebase would be cool as well. Or the ability to create these things. For those of us who like to war more then score.

I just checked the main site.... 8.8 megs!!!! i've owned games with less memory!

This is to everybody who has said things like "nobody uses the editor", "Firaxis, fix things to work for everybody, not just techie types", etc:

1: if you ever find a 100% balanced, bug-free game, chances are you're hallucinating. They don't exist and never will. Besides that, if you'd read the forums, you'd realize that one person's vision of "balance" is another person's nightmare.

2: They call it an editor and they probably should have called it the "Civ 3 Game Enhancement Mod" or something equally fun-filled, so the technophobes out there wouldn't shy away from it. It's probably easier to use the editor than it is to learn the game! You tweak a setting and see what happens. It's not a terribly difficult thing to do!

3: A game's lifespan is determined by add-ons, customizability, etc. Anything that gives it replay value. If they didn't focus on the editor, the game would die sooner. The longer it lives, the more likely they can release more sellable stuff to get more money. It's in their best interest to create an easily modded program. Ever play Half-Life's Team Fortress? Just a mod... and they probably generated a ton more sales of half-life after people saw things like Team Fortress and Counterstrike. I didn't buy it for the basic game (very boring to me), but Counterstrike was amazing.

4: Most importantly, QUIT WHINING! Very few companies are as active with the community as Firaxis is. Very few games are so easily changed. I personally can't believe people actually complain that Firaxis has allowed us to make the game into almost anything we want... that's just amazing to me. "I don't want to be able to change things, I just like to play the game..." So who the **** is stopping you? Go, play, have fun. They change things in the editor AS they change things in the game. There is a default set of rules that they think most people will be okay with, so play with those. For us who like to make the rules more interesting, we can enjoy it too. It's win-win, where is the ****ing problem here?

5: (This one's all for David...)If you know so much about the joys of real life and real people, why did you bother to join a gaming community, read 20 minutes of "humorous" excited posts, and then post your own viewpoint to a bunch of (apparently) lifeless game addicts? I am quite aware that I need to get out more (hey, I got a wife, kid, and full+ time job, it's tough to get out much), but it seems you're in the same boat and don't even know it.

This is like the 3rd or 4th patch, and still we are forced to tediously click through every other civ every other turn to find out when x resource or y luxury is up for trade again (this is absolutely essential at higher levels).

Until a separate trade management screen is added, could you please add some information to the "traded icons" pop-up. Instead of just saying who x resource is traded to (i.e. "Dyes to France") could it also read "Dyes to France 5 turns remaining" or something like that.

This is the most frustrating part of the game for me. It makes the end-game extraordinarily tedious and monotonous. I've had the game from day one, and I've yet to finish a game due to this end-game boredom!

I agree wholeheartedly .... It would be nice to know when the trading or any other "agreements" have reached their 20 round limit.

One other nice thing would be to be able to choose what you want to pillage ... maybe you only want to pillage the mine and not the road ... but you are not given the choice as to what to do ...

Am very glad to see that they added the ability to "abandon" the town .... am wondering what all this will entail though .. will you maintain the people and just move them or do you loose them all together too?

Thats it for now ... :nuke:

What about roads?? Why the eff can't they be used during war as you invade?? That is so stupid.

I want to be able to turn off Culture Flipping.

I want to be able to automate warships to bombard.

I want the multi.sav cheat back.

As for checking trade agreements and the 20 turn limit, people were complaining about that before patch 1.16!!

Are you listening Firaxis? Hello? Hello?

Kewl!
What happens if you load a previously saved game while running the latest patch? Paticularly if the map sizes have changed?
Can this be done please??

Thanks

At least I'm not the only one worried about the shrinking map sizes! Did I miss a post somewhere where somebody whined about the map being to big? When polled which map size Civ3 users chose 52% chose the HUGE setting, 2nd choice was LARGE with 21%. I guess Firaxis wanted to irritate the 52% by cutting 61% of the playable area (by cutting the 256x256 original size to a 160x160 new size they eliminated 61% of the map squares). What gives?

I noticed the editor in the patch doesn't have the Add/Remove buttons for units and resources. The workaround I found is to use the v1.16 Editor to add them. Save it and then load it into the new editor. All of the additions will show up and work fine in the game.

1) Because if you could then you could overhwhelm your opposition with superior mobility. Get 300 tanks, put them next to all of his cities and then wipe him out in one turn. You could also kill all of his strategic resources in one turn.

This way in order to employ that tactic you need to get a right of passage agreement, but if you did that and then attacked him, you'd get a diplomatic penalty from the other civs.

2) How about a feature to disable culture altogether, but then should we have features to disable improvements, war, or diplomacy? Its an integral part of the game now.

3) not a bad idea, but then again thats a function of war. Should war be automated?

4) Yes, considering how bad the game is at placing you, I would really like the ability to view the map before I start playing just so I know I have a decent starting place (not a good one, just a decent one). Taking out the cheat is like removing the editor, so I don't get it.

5) Sheesh, give them time. Look at the fixes in 1.17f, they can't fix everything in 5 seconds. They had to weight what was more important to the customer base and get those fixes first and deliver them.

6) Its obvious they are listening or you would have never received the fixes you have now.

Seems to me that the General Discussion Forums should be renamed the Bit*h and Whine Forum.
