Sort of like explore, but stays in cultural borders. Good for ships when you don't want move them randomly yourself.

or like "worker"... patrol within cult. borders or patrol outside (current city) city within cult. borders by max 5 sq dist. more like the airoplane...

Otherwise a very good tip!

I'll second this suggestion. I remember playing a naval game, where patrolling was very tedious, but necessary, to increase coverage on the coasts. It would be nice to select a ship, give it teh command, and then be able to chart out the patrol route using the shift key and left clicks.

Hm wouldn't it be easier if a patroling unit just can not move ( when patroling is activated ) but can oversee a larger area ? That would simulate that the unit is patroling around it's current position.

Your style would be OK, allthough I would prefer the RTS style I outlined better.

I remember back in the day CIV "HAD" a patrol function. For Airplanes they could go out as much as half of their range and then return to ship or base.

Airplanes still have patrol function in cIV. It's now called recon mission or something like that.

Its called intercept and they just orbit the city or carrier. Or recon where they just reveal the tile area. A patrol is more flexible because it can deny the enemy the ability to transition through certain airspace or area that is determined by the player. So it does not just reveal it attacks enemy air, land and sea units it encounters on the partol path.

The patrol function like in Civ1 or 2 (can't remember) is what is missing.
