I've only played the Super Nintendo one, and it is the easiest Civilization game to play, or is that just because I have the Super Nintendo mouse and SNES memory card?

Which do you prefer?

Why would the SNES version be easier to play than the DOS version?

I've only played the SNES version once or twice but I really hated it because it was so slow and inconvenient. I didn't play it with mouse though (just an ordinary SNES controller).

You're missing some options:

  • Windows 3.x
  • Amiga
  • Atari ST
And, arguably, CivNET. The SNES version was limited by platform constraints and received lackluster porting with questionable modifications. I don't recall whether I ever played the ST version, but I doubt it a stretch to crown the SNES version the worst.

oh ok, I was merely stating that Windows 3.1 is a WINDOWS operating system, hence the name, developer, publisher, gooey, etc.

No, they're two different games.
I thought it was merely a port?

Ie, they are the same game at the core, while the graphics and GUI is different, the rules and algorithms are all the same.

Sure. That's true of most Civ versions. However, Win Civ has more in common with Mac Civ than it does with DOS Civ when it comes to interface. "Bundling" it with the DOS version merely because DOS shares a common lineage with Windows is incorrect. Otherwise, you might as well bundle the DOS version with the Amiga version since the latter determined the VGA color scheme.

I like the DOS version the absoloute best, I don't know why. I haven't tried the SNES version yet, but the DOS version seems to have the most easy to use (and easy to look at :P) city interface. I can't even find the buy button on the Windows one. Plus, another reason is that I feel like im playing the real deal and not some dumbed down version because its on a console. :(

There is none. You press 'B' on your keyboard.

Windows 3.1 is not an operating system, it's an user interface running on DOS.

It got muddled by that point. Windows 3 had protected mode, virtual memory, driver interfacing, and its own file access routines, all "operating system" features lacking in DOS.

DOS, because it just feels that much more hardcore.

CD C:/microprose/civ/civ.exe?

Man, I can't even remember how to use DOS anymore. x_X *is soft*

Close. I think most people did some variation of
Code:
C:
CD \MPS\CIV
CIV.EXE

The .exe is superfluous and most people were already on the C: drive, though.

Yes! That's it exactly. You made my day!:goodjob:

Since I am going at this poll with the notion that I play Civ1 on my Pocket PC and Smartphone (I have both Mini vMac and DOSbox for Windows Mobile). I would have to perfer the Mac version over the DOS/PC and SNES verson and here are my reasons why:

The Windows Mobile port for SNESx9, oftenly the virtual game pad gets stuck unless I repeadedly hit the offending virtual button to fix the problem. Also, in newer Windows Mobile as in the case for my Smartphone, It cannot see the files.

The Windows Mobile port for DOSBox, quite unstable and prone to crash to desktop. Especialy when finishing certan wonders.

The Windows Mobile port for Mini vMac: A bit sluggish but at least I can use the stylist to point at cities and move units.

I've never played Civ on anything other than a PC.

I've played PC version but I've never played SNES version. I've been looking for SNES version for years but I've never seen it anywhere. :/
