Padma or anyone else who cares to answer....

The last time I was here, was June 13, 2007. I had PCLOS installed on my machine back then but it was not compatible with my sound card. A Soundblaster XFI Extreme Gamer card. At the time there was not support for this card. Does anyone know if there is support now?

Also, has the distribution changed since then?

Thought of something else also, will I be able to update my IPOD with PCLOS?

As for your sound card, I don't know.I did a quick scan of the PCLOS forums, and couldn't even find *your* original question. :dunno:

PCLOS is a "rolling release" distro. It is constantly changing. (Although, what gets released to the public is stable.) Tex is planning on releasing "2008" within the next few months - basically, it's just 2007 with all the latest updates already built in, just to make it easier for new installations - no having to download 500MB just to update once installed. ;)

As for your ipod, I understand that at least some PCLOS users use it with ipods. YMMV, though.

I took PCLOS off my computer, but I have added another hard drive to my machine and may re-install. I still have the original disks that I burned but don't know if the distro has been updated much since last June. It's only been not even 4 months. The last I heard on my sound card was the Creative was in no big hurry to help out Linux users with drivers for that card.

Does Linux read Flac files?

Cool. By the way, I got a live CD for Ubuntu and I am taking a look at it, but I think I like PCLOS better. Just need to my X-Fi card to work and I will be in business. I went and checked out that driver, it's only for 64 bit systems, which I don't have.

Over at the Ubuntu forums someone told me about a program called Parallels Visualization that will supposedly run Windows right inside of Linux and works good for gaming. Does anyone know anything about this program.

Padma-- I still love you avatar. Bassetts rule. Currently we have a German Shepard Rottweiler mix that is terribly high strung. Wish I could get him to calm down. He's only a couple of years old though. Also, I am now a Grampa. She is 6 months old. May have told you that though.

Parallels works fine. But if you want something free, and works just as well, try VMWare Server. Or even VirtualBox. I play Civ3 in VMWare Server, where I have installed a copy of Win2K. It also works quite well in VirtualBox, which is totally free, a in speech, as well as in beer. ;)

All three of these require that you have a copy of the other OS (Windows, in this case) which you can install in a "virtual machine". You then run that VM within your Linux session. VirtualBox has a nice option called "Seamless Mode", where the Windows Task Bar is located at the bottom of your screen, right above the KDE Kicker. Otherwise, you don't even know the VM is running. You select a program to run from either your Linux "Launch" button, or from the Windows Start button, and either one just runs on your desktop, like it belongs there.

I currently have 3 Bassets in my house. :) My "old baby" is 14, her "sister" is 12, and this summer my son bought a puppy, who is now 6 months. (He decided their place is not ready for a puppy, yet, so she's staying with us until that time comes.)

And congrats on the granddaughter! They're lots of fun! But the best thing about grandkids is being able to say, "Here. Take her home." :D :D

Padma -- have you tried Ubuntu? It is running pretty well on my machine, so far, but then I haven't tried to add any eye candy for my new 22" wide screen monitor. I feel sort of stupid asking over at the Ubuntu forum but what if I want to uninstall Ubuntu and go back to PCLOS, how do I do it? I still have my PCLOS CD from last June, do I need to redownload it, or is it current?

I think I will try VMserver or Virtual Box. I have windows XP home edition. Windows 2000, and Windows 98. Not going to spend any money for Vista. Which would work the best and if the answer is 2000 or XP, what kind of partition would I install it on, and how would I go about it?

I will PM you about my granddaughter. Don't want to post it here in live forum.

I haven't played with Ubuntu since version 5.0, or thereabouts. Didn't like it then, and haven't seen anything to change my mind, yet. ;)

If you decide to "uninstall" Ubuntu, just format the partition(s) when you install PCLinuxOS. It'll be gone, and PCLOS will be in its place. :) Also, your PCLOS 2007 CD is still good. You will just have to download ~500MB of updates. Tex is planning on releasing "2008" (the latest 2007 build plus all current updates) in the next few months. If you want to wait....

As for a virtual machine, I would assume XP would be the best choice of the three. And the neat thing is yuoi don't install it onto a real partition. It is actually a (very large) file, or set of files, managed by your VM manager. For instance, running PCLOS, I started VMWare Server. In its window, I told it to create a 10GB machine for my Win2K system. After it created the space, I used its settings panel to have it boot from CD. I put my Win2K CD in the drive, and clicked the "power on this machine" button in VMWare. Half an hour or so later, I had a functional Win2K system available directly on my Linux desktop. VirtualBox works in a very similar manner.

There is also no noticeable (to me) slowdown using the VM. I only have 512M RAM, and only allocated about 180 (whatever the default was) to the VM, and I can't tell that it runs any slower than it did years ago when it was the only OS on my system. IMHO, it is comparable to my wife's old XP system in speed. So if you have at least 1G RAM, XP should be fine.

I am going back to PCLOS, I downloaded the latest version anyway. What about Grub? What will happen to it?

problem: I am on the live disk right now. Problem is that my screen resolution is way too large and the live disk won't let me fix it. Did not have this problem with Ubuntu at first. Will we be able to get this fixed? PCLOS did recognize my monitor. But couldn't do anything with my video card with the live disk

Creative is suppose to release full-support for both 32-bit and 64-bit computers. They are, however, extremely slow in doing so.

Had to go back to Ubuntu -- Gutsy Gibbon It's the only distro that saw all of my hardware. I have my video card working correctly. Ubuntu actually put an icon on the desktop for my external hard drive. I have one of those Western Digital "My Book' hard drives. 750 gig. Even got 'the cube' spinning. This Linux is pretty cool and I can't tell you how glad I am to just about be away from Microsoft almost for good. :D

Anyone here know any good CD ripping packages? Also looking for a good player that has good cataloging, cover art features. I have Amarok installed but it appears that Exaile might be a little better in it's library features. Then again perhaps I don't quite know how to utilize Amarok to it's fullest potential.
