Peloponnesian War Scenario Development Thread

what do you mean? sure it was a Spartan mistake, and the Athenians took advatage of it, but either way, it was a victory

as for this land stuff-all the maps I've seen of the pelomponesian war place Sphactria near the coast, but still well inland

I didn't deny it was an Athenian victory - only that it was a run-of-the-mill land battle.

Every map I've seen shows Sphacteria as an island ...

Back to my point, had the Athenians at the time been confident enough to invade the Peloponnese properly, they wouldn't have been fortifying Pylos - they would have been marching inland.

which brings me back to my point of trying to get the Spartans to admit they were wrong anyway :p fortifying PYlos meant they didnt want to lose it- it also meant that the more people under the Athenian, or Spartan sphere of conrol the better- as it gave more oppertunity ot work its magic at convinceing the local popualce to take a firm stance on the issue- point is not so much the Athenians story, but rather the Spartans- if they had wnated to, they coul dhave set outside Athens, and even attacked it if they wanted to- hell, the guys by the end of the war figured out that pileing dirt up the side of a wall would make a nice ramo to send up troops... they could have dont that easilly enough with teh Athenian long walls if they had to, but they didnt

I do not presume to know why the people back in the 5th C BC took the decisions they did. I'm just pointing out that the military difficulties were real enough. Athens was perhaps the best-fortified place in Greece at the time, and the Spartans' forte wasn't siege warfare.

OK, I shall consider this particular discussion closed till someone has something new to say - I believe I've made may point as clear as I am able.

I agree with The Robot From Nottingham that it would be good if it was very hard to assault the capitals.

I'll also lend you an idea for mercenaries:
In my upcoming Magnamund Mod I'll have ordinary Crossbowmen costing 50 and requiring iron. I'll also have a Mercenary Crossbowman costing 60 and requiring silver (a luxury resource). I'll have a similar one requiring gold (also a lux).
So, slightly more expensive, and requiring pay, but not iron.
I suppose you wont have crossbowmen in this scenario :p , but I assume you'll use Kryten's Mercenary and Allied Hoplites. :)

Okay...Lotsa contradiction here...Most people seem to favor the floodplain under cities and give flood plains a huge defense factor...Sorry, Xen, but I guess it's gonna have to be that way...It's what most civvers want...This may be changed when I go to test play, but for now, go with it. Remember, no walls in Spartan cities, and Flood Plains only under Athens.
How's the Epheboi comin' along Kryten?
P.S. Kryten, I'm going to try to create my first unit, the Myrmidon. Can I utilize this unit in any way?
Yes, mrtn, the Hired Hoplite shall be utilized...
I don't think allied Hoplites can be utilized here, since they weren't really allied like in the Persian War. If It can be utilized, tell me.

mmm. Im not sure there was any flood plain in Greece. Or 'is' for that matter.
When I was there (ok, alot can happen in two years ;)) I only saw rocky plains filled with olive trees. Not really Sahara-desert-like...

whatever. Like the project anywayz!

We're only doing this to simulate a plague that struck Athens. (The whole Flood Plain Disease thing)

P.S. How does everyone like my new avatar? :D

so far I have seen like all of TWO people who want the floddplains at the moment- I think I'll hold off before placeing them :p

besides, we still dont know all the goodies that will come with c3c...

as a note, i noticed this map dosent have any king units on it-why is that?

I want this to be a victory point location game. Note how the leaders in the real history survived. (Except Pericles who died in that terrible plague.)

and what point of victory woul dbe better then the enimies capital! :D

seriouslly though- i agree that for Athens and Sparta, the name sake cities themselves should have uber defences- but I dont thin the terrain should be it! I by far prefer just putting them on a hill, surrounded by a river, whicj already provideds a huge defence bonus

Hmm...Well, they weren't surrounded by a river, but it is a good idea...Both Athens and Sparta were by a river, right? If so, I'm all for this idea!:goodjob:

I like the idea of Hills surrounded by rivers under the capitals, but there are a couple of other cities which should have them like Thebes. Also, how are you going to do Thermopylae (the all important mountain pass)? As a city or a fortress or ignore it all together.

We have Thermopylae.;) Thebes isn't intended to be a victory point location, so I think no go on your suggestion. Nice idea, though! :D

I must finish Xen's 'Cataphract variations' first. ;)

Allied Hoplites ---> re-name them!
Call them "Corinthian Hoplites", or "Ionian Hoplites", or "Syracusian Hoplites", or anything else your devious mind can think of. :D

As for the "Myrmidon".....you tell me:-

"Myrmidons: In Greek mythology, inhabitants of the island of Aegina in the Saronic Gulf, the followers of Achilles during the Trojan War. During the reign of Achilles' grandfather Aeacus, Hera, the wife of Zeus, sent a plague that destroyed the island's inhabitants, because Zeus loved Aegina, the maiden after whom the island was named. Aeacus, in despair, prayed to Zeus; seeing a troop of ants as he did so, he asked that they be transformed into people numerous enough to fill his empty city. Zeus answered his prayer in this manner, and because Aegina was repopulated from an anthill, its people became known as Myrmidons, from the Greek word meaning “ants” (myrmêkes).

("Thessalian Hoplites", or "Achaean Hoplites", or "Cretan Hoplites", or "Rhodian Hoplites", or a thousand-and-one other type of Hoplites.....) :)

all this talk of hoplites reminds- i am planning on using the greek swoars man as at least the roman and very like all the italics hopltie, or mabey "elite" unit

that unit was made by utahjazz :)

You mean the Myrmidon? I guess I can't utilize it...I thought it was during only the Trojan War...Hmmm...Maybe I'll just rename the Allied Hoplite to Syracusean Hoplite...Xen, would you do that for us?

lemme get the map done first ;)

All right, I didn't mean to rush you... Now as for City Improvements, should I add any? I'll need some ideas/ building creators if yes.
