PH 16: Guns Make a Man

Prince, v3.19

Truthfully, the title of this game is “Guns make a man stronger than he is.”

Thus, the variant rules: In this game, we will be starting TWO (2) world wars. Once we reach Gunpowder (w/o “unreasonable delay”), we must declare on any 3 empires. Once all those three have been defeated, we declare on the other three. We can only win by conquest.

And the opening shot AFTER I moved the warrior to that hill.

We will be playing using the trusted DM SG Etiquette Guide:
Alpha: The quality of your report outweighs the quality of your play. We’re here to have fun, and, of course, winning is fun, but losing in style is preferable to a boring win.

Bravo: Reports should be detailed, with plenty of screen shots and player commentary, explanations, musings, etc; an auto-log dump will not suffice. Shots of the F9 screens and overview shots of the empire are nice too, once in a while.

Charlie: Punctuality rocks! “24/48” means post a "got it" within 24 hours of when the last save was posted, and play within 48 hours of that ‘got it.’ Waiting 47 hours to ask for a skip is lame. Punk out two times in a row, and you’ll be dropped from the roster. Skips and swaps are fine, but try to let us know sooner, rather than later.

Delta: Major game decisions (war/peace declarations, religion swaps, city placement, etc) should be arrived at via group consensus.
1. If the team disagrees with you, either argue your case better, or do it their way. Do NOT just blow them off and do it your way because it's your turn.
2. However, if there’s no consensus and you’re up, do it your way and explain why. Conversely, if someone else is up, don't whine when they do it their way.
3. Similarly, overruling techs or city builds is rude and should be done via consensus, barring an emergency.
4. In extraordinary situations, sometimes an opportunity presents itself that the group didn't foresee. If the consequences of it are great, players should stop, and refer the question to the group.

Echo: Being a better player does not give you the right to belittle anyone else or their play. Other people are going to disagree with you on major decisions; get used to the idea, and play nice. If not, take your ball and go home.

Foxtrot: Thread spam is good. Trash talking, poking fun, gentle ribbing, virtual noogies, and generally horsing around are all encouraged, but don’t be rude.

Golf: Automate sparingly.
1. Workers should almost never be automated, except perhaps late-game or building a trade network. However, if you have to, set your game options to “disallow automated worker forest chopping” and “keep previous improvements.”
2. Use of the “Emphasis” buttons is fine, but let the group know and explain your reasoning (specialization is a major game decision). If you prevent growth in a city, let the group know and remind them to take it off. Do NOT let the governor select build orders.
3. Sending units on go-to routes that last beyond your set is acceptable only if they’re heading for a rally point or if you otherwise inform your teammates.

Hotel: NEVER fortify Great People. Is it so hard to push the spacebar 15 times??

India: Sign spamming is rude. Signs can be helpful reminders, but too many signs makes them easily ignored. Once a sign is no longer valid, delete it. [The only exception to this are city specialization signs.]

I know Ozbenno and rolo expressed interested already, so I have their spots reserved, but I’m looking for 2 or 3 more sign-ups.

I will be playing the first turn-set in about 24 hours or so.

Lurker's Comment:
I'm guessing it's "only" Prince because at two points you'll be taking on three civs at once.

Yeah I figured that one all by myself! ;). I'm just guessing we might be warring against outdated troops, but I might be wrong. It's been a while since playing prince, so maybe I'm just undersestimating it.

Edit: Reminds me of Saints1 SG on prince where Isabella had only her capital with two warriors in 850 BC :crazyeye:

Good luck with this guys! Though I think you should move up a level (or two...) :)

And good to see you back pholk! Hope your computer won't let you down again before the end of this one...

Hey, that sounds like the situation we'll be in Sengir02!

Why only prince? In any case, I could play :)

:yup:

though there are many well-wishers, few are brave enough to play...only to suggest the level be moved up. Such warriors!!

Meiz, you're in, adn glad to be back all around.

re: my comp ~ i lost unit graphics yesterday so had to do a complete reinstall and wipe twice of Civ :D

Don't know if my crappy play would fit in here but I like war so if you are looking for more would love to play.

Lurking mode on.

Not a sign up. Conquest is my least enjoyable victory type.

all rightey, welcome aboard all (to players and lurkers alike :goodjob: ). I'll still take one more sign-up if a late-comer sees this overnight.

As for the settler move, part of me would like to move 1 NW to see what we can see from that hill.

As an overall strategy, i think we should focus on a Specialist Economy w/the Philo trait, and try and get a decent-sized early land grab with the IMP trait. The goal would be to have the largest empire BEFORE we start World War I.

Signing in.

As we're philosophical, we should make use and try and bulb down the path to Gunpowder, which would be via Great Engineers I assume.

Bulbing techs with GEs , it is only Prince after all.

I'd say Metal Casing and Hanging Gardens could be good early techs/builds for this.

We can get to Gunpowder through Guilds or Education, I'd say Guilds would be a good fit for this game, we can have Knight backup to our Janisaires. Get Engineering along the way for Trebuchets and we're set!

I'd settle in place for the extra hammer.

BTW, I've never lost a PH game I've played (3 from 3 - Wonderland, Spaceman, Hypermegaglobalnet) so don't lets change that fact :mischief:

I'd say Metal Casing and Hanging Gardens could be good early techs/builds for this.

I'd say Masonry and Pyramids as well :mischief:

Settling in place nets us two yummy 3f2g lake tiles (with lighthouse of course). Most of our starting tiles would also be farmable, so settling in place looks good. Specialists economy sounds very good as I'm currently also playing at very cottage oriented SG ;)

About the rules, what kind of limitations we have if the AI declares war against us before gunpowder? Peace as soon as possible with reasonable prize? Or could we end up declaring world war against civilizations already hammered down? :)

It is, but easily worth it if we're running SE. Plus it generates GE points to help with the bulbing plan.

There seems to be a last open slot ... I am grabbing it :)
in, welcome aboard

Are you using BUFFY for this? If not, why not?
how can i make it a not-mod ~ is there a way via the install?? I had to double wipe Civ b/c i lost my icons after i reinstalled either BUG or put on BUFFY. so now i'm just straight 3.19 for now.

I'd say Masonry and Pyramids as well :mischief:
i would say if we only find a city with stone should we consider that.

As we're philosophical, we should make use and try and bulb down the path to Gunpowder, which would be via Great Engineers I assume.
i like this, too, esp as Hamman replaces the Aqueduct.

if we are declared on, we just can't conquer or raze a city. Plus, we can not declare on others before Guns.

also, WE can decide who we declare on. So, i figure it'll be the three weakest but ya' never know.

pholk's "to do" list: Settling in place, and heading with fishing (i think) to get those commerce heavy tiles online fast, and then towards AH too.

Set 1

Firstly, let me say that when I cropped the first screenshot, I didn’t realize I still had all my pics selected, so they’re all poorly done. Only one, though, was completely ruined.

So, I settled in place, and headed Fishing and warrior as the opening moves.
Image01.jpg

I proceeded to wander afar, whilst pressing Enter.

T8/3800:
Image02.jpg

Went with AH next to get to those sheep. In retrospect, maybe I should’ve did mining>bronze working. Ah well… I didn’t go right to the workboat either here. At this point, our warrior was a bit far, so I figured we should have another one nearby just in case.

And, then I went and spotted our first barb animal next turn to our south. True, they don’t invade our borders, but you never know when one might go rabid and kill us all.

T11/3725: Our warrior is done at Instanbul. I went WB next while MMing for production and no growth; I got it due in 8 turns.

Buddhism fidl; and we found stone, but it’s near India; we find out 2 turns later its:
Image03.jpg

Thought I had a pic of the stone, but I guess not.

Another turn, another opponent:
Image04.jpg

The animals finally attack!
Image05.jpg

and success (for us, I mean ;) )

T19: WB > warrior for actual city protection while I’m aiming to grow ASAP.

Next turn, him:
Image06.jpg

And I found the Dutch empire north of us:
Image07.jpg

Our warrior killed wolf number 2 on that same hill he’s pictured on. We have a promo waiting, but I held off on it since he’s only at 1.8. I sent him to heal on that west forest.

24: ah > mining. And here’s our horses:
Image08.jpg

Our warrior was done, and I swapped to a worker to help improve Istanbul. Hinduism FIDL next turn, and a couple turns after that, we meet Persia:
Image09.jpg

I stopped at turn 32 (remember, no set turn limits?), when mining came due. I thought a quick 5-turn stopover to Hunting might be good before we head for BW. Our worker is due in about 8 turns or so. After that, I think more warriors until we can go for a settler at pop4 maybe.
