It is a quite scary problem and i want to know how to fix it.

Pretty much when i'm on the net and a phone call comes through to the house phone socket where the modem is plugged in, it causes my computer to freeze.

Needless to say, quite distressing.
Does anyone have any idea what could be the problem here, and how to fix it? hasn't happened recently, but it will again soon enough.

anyway, info you may need:

winxp pro
lucent win modem

I have never seen or even heard of these symptons before. Could it
be that you are using call hold (?) or whatever feature of either the
modem or a separate program?

That is all I can think of. Hope it helps.

Have you checked if there's a setting for the modem or connection that allows the modem to disconnect incoming calls? I seem to remember there was a setting like that, but haven't dialed-up for a long time now...

i've looked around for something like that, but haven't found it...

@bladester:
fairly sure we don't have hold here, but even if we did, i'd expect a disconnect, not a freeze. something has to be wrong on my computer i think.

Do you have your Modem and Phone plugged into the same outlet, with that router dealie? If so, it seems that the phone is either not plugged in right, or the router thing doesn't work properly. I have my phone in the same outlet with my Modem, right next to me computer, and I can see how that would be a potential problem.

A Winmodem is a stripped-down modem - putting some of the modem functionality into the software in the PC, I think even depending on it being in the Windows Operating System.

Since Windows is doing at least some of the modemprocessing for you, if something goes wrong, it could certainly freeze your system. My suggestion would be to go buy a *real* modem. ;)

it was all i had available to me at the time :(

Yep, as said before, I suggest you buy a normal modem, I don't think you need to pay much for one nowadays for a dial-up one, you can even get one that's internal, those are anormally cheaper.
