Pirates, Really?

I realize I'm in the minority for thinking these things but a) the Civilization has never really been the historical simulator some people make it out to be and b) I'd much rather play as the "Republic of Pirates" than some civilization I've never heard of or yet another version of England. Honestly I think broad civ names like this probably fit into what the vision for this game was better than using a real civ's name anyways - people get hung up on the historical accuracy of turning the Mississippians into the Mongolians on age transition, but if I converted my antiquity civ with a bunch of horse tiles in its territory into a generic "Horse Lord" civilization strongly modeled after the Mongolians I think many would have less of a problem with that (though then you'd get the complaints about specific civs not being included, so you're trading one thing for another).

My opinion is that it's a game and I want to have fun. Give me fun mechanics over "historical accuracy" any day. Bring back vampires and giant death robots, add cowboys and ninjas, I don't care as long as they're fun. I know people hate that but it's just my opinion.

And honestly... are the people who value historical accuracy above all else in their Civ games even still playing Civ 7? I get the impression they're not... and yes, I know there are exceptions, but I think a lot of that group never picked up the game to begin with after seeing the age transition system.

The fact that it’s free makes things a bit better, at least it doesn’t feel like you’re paying for something you don’t want.
Is it really free? I mean we have payed alot for a game that was not really finished at release, and now when content finally starts coming in people claim its free.
I would rather say we have already pated for it and in that sense Im definately paying for something I dont want in a game of civilization (i.e. Pirate republic).

Sure, Civilization isn't know to be particularly "historically accurate". Still, I believe there are limits to what can be included to a Civilization game in order for it to at least still be considered a Civilization game and not just any other turn-based strategy game. Those limits are, again, wider or narrower depending on who you ask, obviously, but mechanics that go into the realm of fantasy/pop culture should only be added as optional game modes.

Pirates, as a separate civilization, even if they very briefly controlled a semi-autonomous "republic", are part of the realm of popular culture/fiction. Not a single serious historian would consider that pirates ever created a civilization of their own, they were always part of wider civilizations (British, English, Dutch, French, Spanish, Berber, Arab, Phoenician, even American, etc.)

Honestly, just on vibes alone the pirates seemslike the worst idea for a Civ that they have added to a Civ game. However...

1) They are free
2) You can turn them off.

So as far as I'm concerned this is a mon-issue.

The Republic of Salé would be a much better choice, and would serve as a good bridge between Carthage and the Ottomans.

YES THIS. I was very happy at the addition of the Great Blue Hole. I really don't want fantasy Natural wonders, because somehow It's always the Caribbean that gets al that bullfeathers... Bermuda Triangle, Fountain of Youth, El Dorado.
The Cerro de Potosi is essentially El Dorado without the glow-up, so if you read it like the actual Cerro, it goes down easier

Also please...please don't make the Palace building a giant skull, please, don't
C'mon, for funzies that would look cool, certainly will not resemble another city center from another game you know, but details

I get where you're coming from, but even if said semi-autonomous "republic" only existed for a short time, if it existed at all that certainly means there's a place for it here IMO. I'm no history buff but I'm pretty sure past Civ games have had leaders that may not have even existed (Gilgamesh and Kupe come to mind) and other things of questionable veracity (aren't the Hanging Gardens only known from written texts, for example?). I'm just saying this isn't exactly uncharted territory for the series.

And sure, maybe this drives serious historians nuts, but my point is this has never been any type of serious historic portrayal to being with. I used to launch interplantery starships into space that I chopped out of wood in the early 1800s while Gandhi threatened to nuke me into oblivion, I think the ship has already sailed on keeping serious historians appeased, haha.

Yes, and we also got El Dorado as an actual natural wonder. ugh. Lake Guatavita could be added with some actual El Dorado nods, instead of recreating the Dreamworks movie. (If they ever add the Muisca it could be a worthwhile inclusion)

Yup, just what I was talking about.

I think Firaxis has it in their DNA to do very...silly stuff mixed within Civilization from time to time. I remember commenting this some time ago, but IF they have to do silly stuff to get it out of their system, I'd rather it's at least root it in history references, or "what if" scenarios. I prefer to have Pirate republics and Assasin strongholds rather than Vampires, Ley lines, magical heroes and Giant Mechas.

I did expect this to come later in development, not going to lie.

i am not understanding why Pirate Republic is being added to this game. Firaxis is not committed to any facsmile of historicity. their priorities are totally off. We are adding a non-civilization to civilization BEFORE adding Ottomans? we are missing major major eras of key civilizations. This development team needs a wake up call. Iceland hopefully will be a medieval/exploration based viking civilization at least. Pirate Republic is not a real civilization and should not be in the game period. but at least don't add this fantasy civilization before REAL civilization that are conspicuously missing such as HRE, Austria, Edo Japan, Aztecs/Monty, Alex, byzantium, Brazil, Ottomans, renaissance italy/venice... i could go on. please rethink your priorities of who deserves inclusion in this game. REAL civilizations deserve priority.
Because it will be fun. Sometimes the answer is fun. If you can give me a civ that provides unique gameplay that is always preferable.

No its not. You’ve paid for the game.

Can we turn off the pirates specifically or do we have to disable the whole dlc?
Using this logic nothing additional can ever be free because you paid for the base game, even if everything advertised in the base game was provided at that time. Do you understand how silly that sounds?
