Sure, I'd be happy too. You're right that there seems to be a bit of a shortage of new games and pitboss hosts generally on the forum. The requirement to have a computer that's always on 24x7 for a year or more is probably a big part of it. Just set something up and send me the connection details and I'll test it out. (Probably a good idea to send me your MSN address too if you use MSN). You'll need to know your public IP address (e.g. from
http://whatismyip.com/ ) and also open port 2056 inbound on your firewall.
Also, there are some game options you should be sure to turn on for pitboss.
- Simultaneous turns: on
- Turn timer: on (24 hours is normal although personally I prefer 48h)
- Take over AI: on (to allow a replacement player to take over if one of the original players goes MIA or retires to AI)
You don't generally need to bother with a game password, since everyone will password protect their civs anyway. You definitely want a
secure, unique, randomly generated admin password though (e.g. from
http://www.goodpassword.com/ or similar) just so there's no doubts later that anyone has cracked it in the event that someone gets unusually lucky...
Also - the SMTP email notification functionality that's built into the pitboss app doesn't seem to work with google mail. But you can probably just skip that anyway (leave it all blank) since civstats website can be configured to send out email notifications anyway.
That's the technical stuff. If you haven't played much pitboss before, it's also worth reading some of the more typical game rules that hosts tend to use (especially where you don't already know all the players). Playing turns 'in sequence' when at war with someone (i.e. no double moves) is the most fundamental one, but other rules about pre-war turn order, city gifting, XP farming, replaying turns after reloads etc may be less obvious and less standardized between games, so it's worth having a look around. The Oob's pitboss rules are a good place to start (search this forum) as are the game rules on the Tactical Gamer website or (for something with more of an RP flavour) Chaos and Civility:
