Planning my Next Move

Ok, I am currently playing a game. (noble, fractal, quick, small, me as Isabella vs. Cyrus, Kublai, and Julius, I disabled time and space victories)

The map consists of two large continents, one of which is sort of this diagonal shape, and one, slightly smaller, which is shaped something like a sideways question mark, with an archipelago as the dot. On one continent, there is me, Cyrus, and Julius. When the game started, me and Cyrus shared the northern half of the diagonal continent, with Julius in the south. Kublai has his own continent, the lucky prick.

Early in the game, I decided that Cyrus would have to go, so I could expand. I attacked and seized Pasargardae, and razed Persepolis. That divided Persia in half, and Julius seized the opportunity to attack the south of Persia and took Gordium. I took Arbela just north of that. After a couple years, Cyrus was reduced to just Susa. Julius sent many SOD's to take it, but all failed. I besieged and captured the weakened city, and consolidated the north.

Fast Forward, as nothing significant happens for a while, other than the routine.

It’s the Renaissance for me, Modern for Julius and Kublai (!!!) All nations still employing riflemen level technology( though this may change soon). Ok, Julius is currently pleased with me, but Kublai is annoyed for some obscure reason, and basically won't talk. Both Julius and Kublai have outpaced me in tech significantly, and I cannot trade anything. I am running free religion, but Julius is Buddhist and Kublai is Hindu. I recently rose above Julius in the power graph, but Kublai still is much more powerful. I need to decide what my next move will be, as indecision has paralyzed me. I COULD attack Julius, as, though he is alot more advanced, I am slightly more powerful than him. However, I would rather not fight a war so close to home or ruin my good relations with Julius. I COULD attack Kublai, but he is separated from me by an ocean, and is much more powerful. I suppose I could raid the cities he built on the archipelago near him, as they are probably lightly defended, but that won't hurt him much. I dare not attack his powerful main cities, though I suppose they ARE very vulnerable to naval attack, all of them being costal (there is a very large desert in the center of his lands) I COULD go for a peaceful victory of some kind, but I doubt that Diplomatic would be feasible, as there are only three countries, all approximately equal size. All that is left is cultural victory, but I am fairly far from that, and it is already in the 21 century (at least I turned time victory off, or I would be screwed, being in only second place, and sometimes slipping to third) Should I try and throw all support to Julius, convert to Buddhism, and attack Kublai? Should I betray an old ally for hopes of an easy victory? How about trying to out-culture my rivals?

PS. If you want, I can post the save

I see you have several big cities. That's good for a culture victory. You just need to get workers to construct cottages near 3 big cities, and use emancipation for them to grow twice as fast. At this stage accumulae enough money to rush-buy some temples and build cathedrals in the 3 cities. After that is done, switch to caste system and build farms around the 4th city and hire artists to generate some great artists (aka culture bombs). Get culture rate as high as you can for the final rush.

If you go for military victory, you need to locate the specials of your enemy. Cut off the iron/coal/oil so that your enemy cannot build good units. Then you'll win. For your question on who to attack, you can try asking Juliuis to declare war to Kublai. He's closer to Kublai so he'll get attacked first. When Julius asks you for help, you can ask him for a small favour.

Hmm... just Scientific Method on the 21st Century? On Standard speed I bet you can win or at least reach the modern era before the 20th/21st century and not need to turn off Time. Try it sometimes...

Ahem... since you turned time victory off...

1. Diplomacy: depends on who's the top scorer... you did say you were second. so...
if Caesar: you have no chance
if Kublai: change to Buddhism and you will likely win after improving relations with Caesar

2. War
Research towards Fiber Optics or Mass Media so you have something to bribe with. Bribe Caesar to go to war with Kublai, wait a few turns then declare war yourself. All you do is pillage important modern-era resources like Oil and watch Caesar destroy Kublai. Try to get the last kill on cities to capture them for yourself.

3. Space
Since you're behind in tech... your only hope here is to go for the Internet.

4. Time (if it was on)
Research Biology, convert lands to farms. Watch score shoot up and you win.

time and space are off
leaves
- war (domination here, seems the most doable one)
- cultural (too late IMHO, you'll get crushed by Kublai)
- diplomatic, Robo Kai gave you the way to go.

In this situation i would go for Julius. Build units non stop! vassalage + theocracy are best here= you need a religion.

Ok, I did what Xin Yu said, and switched to a more specialized economy. I continued to advance, and though I slipped into third place, I began to get closer to my enemies tech-wise. I signed a defensive pact with Julius, but that did not provoke Kublai. When Kublai's capital (Karkorum) gained legendary status, I knew that I must try and beat Kublai to a CV. I began to do everything possible to expand the cultures of Madrid, Barcelona, and Seville, and I eventually won a rather unimpressive cultural victory at the embarrassing date 2108, but at least I won. Though Julius formed the UN in 2085, I was lucky, in that because of my huge culture cities, I had a large population and the most votes, and was able to stall the election by abstaining.

This makes my twelfth game so far, and eleventh victory, the third one on noble. Thanks all!

Just out of idle curiosity, how many Great People have you gotten? I always play Epic (it just feels right), and have no idea how many you'd get on Quick.

You should get the same number, as the cost of each great person scales with game speed.
