i have never played civ's game before. so i am really new at this. thought to learn the game i would try to play a couple of "Play A Scenario" the American Revolution, except i keep geting beat by the English. Any tips you can give me, to learn the game and beat the English.

thanks

make sure you are playing on the right difficultly level (there is a big difference). You won't spoil the game by starting on a lower level

however lots of ways to get beat -so not sure how to help

there are great free lessons at -

if you are losing in wars the guide the military strategy (stack of doom) is key reading

If you're new to civ, you shouldn't start by playing a scenario.
Those are :
- not showing the full game, the american one having almost no diplomatic options nor teching
- a lot more difficult than the regular game
- really different from the regular game, meaning that after you find a way to beat the scenario, you still won't be able to beat the full game.

I suggest
- reading the manual!
- playing the tutorial. He's not very good, but at least it exists.
- play the beginning of a few games at any level to get a feeling of the game
- start a game when you feel you understand what it's about, play it out. don't spend too much time on settler level, it's not going to help you a lot.

Anytime you feel lost, read the forum ;).

Nitpicking:

Barbarians and Ghengis are alot easier than the real game. I managed to beat those on deity after playing them for only a few days (they were alot of fun, nonetheless).

I agree wholeheartedly with the rest of that post (especially the 'read the manual' part).
